Pleasant Activities

I'd go one step further in saying you need pleasurable activities in your day.   In both my rehab, and my psych hospital, I've been told, that when building a wellness plan, you need at least one activity that is pleasurable, and one activity that gives you a sense of mastery / accomplishment.
 
My pleasurable activities include:
reading
writing 
knitting
watching DVD'
Listening to music
Talking with friends.
surfing the net.

 
My mastery activities include:
playing my harp
writing on my professional website.
knitting (double bonus)
exercise.

interesting discussion.  After my most recent slip I suffered from a round of depression.  It was like a mental hangover after the physical hangover had passed.  It resulted in a complete state of fear and mental paralysis for a couple of days.  athough not drinking it madet trying to stay off drinking much harder.  Thankfully these things pass
 
I do think some types of depression probably have a basis in a chemical inbalance in the brain (but not really my area of expertise)).
 
But to take up where you left off, one ot the things that helped me move on was building into my daily routine and planning to do one fun thing towords the end of each day.  I find myself then looking forward to it and this initself gives me a subtle lift.
 
So,  I definatley found what you suggests works.

Hi Ashley,

You make a really good point. Since I haven't been drinking I find I am much more open to trying new activities. A few things I've enjoyed doing:

  • Going to the art gallery- when I went to the gallery I ended up buying a membership. There are a ton of activities as along with all of the exhibits
  • Going to the library- having a nice quiet place to read outside of my house. I was amazed  at how many different activities you can try out there. Just have a look in the magazine they put out for the courses they offer.
  • Go-karting- there are a lot of great indoor tracks around me and it's a great way to get an adrenaline rush in a safe way, especially now that the weather is getting lousy in Ontario
  • And probably the most important.....I really appreciate spending time with friends and family now. I find I listen more attentively and pay closer attention to them.

According to some experts, depression is caused by a lack of pleasant activities. What are pleasant activities? Pleasant activities are simply things you like to do.

The basic idea is that when people are not depressed, their lives are made up of a wide variety of activities, some pleasant and positive, some unpleasant and negative, and some neutral. According to the theory, in order to feel better you need to have at least some positive activities in your life. Also, people stay depressed because they have at least the usual share of unpleasant activities but not enough pleasant activities. One of the solutions to overcoming depression is to try to schedule more positive and pleasant events in your life; this will help to get the balance between pleasant and unpleasant activities closer to what it is for people who aren’t depressed.

One of your most important jobs in this program is to take the risk of actually testing some of your predictions about what will happen if you try to do something pleasant. Because any experiment can go wrong, we’ll want you to repeat some experiments to see what happens each time. You don’t have to believe that you’ll enjoy the activity; you just have to be willing to try and see what happens. Think of yourself as a scientist who is performing experiments on your moods.

If you’re having some trouble coming up with some activities, here’s a list of some simple activities to get you started:

Going for a walk
Getting dressed up
Meeting someone new
Going to a concert
Having coffee with a friend
Going shopping for myself
Going to the beach
Playing golf
Climbing
Reading sacred books
Going to see a sports event
