The Power of Persuasion

Young people are totally influenced by the TV.  Shows like the real world, jersey shore and Big brother show real people drinking as a reward!  I know when I was a teenager I totally thought drinking was cool - a lot of that had to do with what I saw on TV. Getting plastered seemed to go hand in hand with university! - according to movies and the tv anyways!

Hi Ashley,

Well i'm not a hundred percent sure about tv advertising and it's correlation to how much teens drink, but I definitely think that seeing other teens in tv shows drink etc. makes teens want to drink. And the juice like coolers are often marketed towards a younger crowd. I also think peer pressure is like the number 1 cause for young adults drinking to excess. It was what caused me to begin drinking.... I'm not really sure how we can try to elimate peer pressure...more education on the effects of it... presentations on drunk driving etc..

Members,

Advertising and the marketing of alcohol can play a critical role in the level of consumption among young people. Many teenagers experiment with alcohol, some consume more then others and this may be partially due to advertising.

There are many reasons why teenagers can be more easily convinced or prone to drink alcohol. Peer pressure, if family member’s drink, if it’s easily accessible are all examples that can lead to the consumption of alcohol.

Exposure to television advertising seems to have a correlation with the increased chance of getting drunk.

Members, do you believe television or advertising as an influence on the amount of alcohol teenagers consume?
