Hi Runnermom,

Thank you for telling us about what you have been going through. It struck me that said you are terrified to go to a social even without a buzz. Terrified is a really strong word; what exactly are you terrified of? Do you think social anxiety could be at play here?

Many people turn to alcohol to self medicate for anxiety and/or depression. This will seem to work initially but alcohol makes anxiety and depression worse in the long run. Do you think you may be self medicating? What happened a year and a half ago that triggered the drinking?

Runnermom,

I have certainly had the feeling of a deep desire to drink and finding it very difficult to stop. I used alcohol as my social courage and found it hard to imagine life without alcohol. I did try to moderate because I wanted to keep drinking.  After several tries and only temporary successes, I finally figured that for me it was easier to quit completely versus always policing myself. It was definitely not easy at first but it has gotten much easier with time.
I have been without alcohol for over 2 1/2 years and I have discovered that life is much better for me without.
Keep posting and telling us how you are doing.

Yes, I would sit outside the Taco Macs with a pint of Fosters just to get in. No longer it was a luxury, it became a necessity. The worst part was, I thought I could quit on my own, but always came up an excuse to drink. After entering the fellowship of AA, insistence of my shrink, and going through the book alcoholics anonymous, I realized the main problem centers in the mind and it will always trick me back into taking that first drink. And that I have to change the perspective of life. I cant be selfish and self-centered. Had to change.

Hi everyone. Like I said I’m a newbie. This is my first time reaching out for help. So I’ve struggled with drinking for about a year and a half. I love being buzzed/drunk. I can’t stand being sober. I’m definitely sober the majority of the time but when I start drinking in the afternoons (2-4 times a week) I can’t stop. I’ll drink to get drunk. Now I’m terrified to go to a social event without being at least buzzed. Does anyone else feel that way?
