Very wise Brenna, though I prefer beef jerky. It lasts longer... My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/15/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 359 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 7,180 Amount Saved: $1,938.60 Life Gained: Days: 58 Hrs: 16 Mins: 20 Seconds: 35

I just the other day had to drive to the Bay Area from Stockton, which is about a 2 hour drive 1 way so 4 hours round trip, and I used sugar free cinnamon gum but I also stopped twice as a "reward", got a (small) cup of coffee once (and ok, I admit it, I got a cookie at the 2nd stop). I think we have to do little things very frequently and tell ourselves it's a reward, because so often we did use a smoke as a reward. And now we aren't taking that "addiction" break, so we have to re-frame breaks, too. (I'm fairly sure this would be BOTH content AND context re-framing, but Alohakeia may know more about that than I) ;) Hugs, N2 Psych My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/9/2008 Smoke-Free Days: 58 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,160 Amount Saved: $290.00 Life Gained: Days: 7 Hrs: 17 Mins: 25 Seconds: 10

Rusty that's one of the boringest drives in the world, hour after hour of prairie and piney woods. DLs advice is good for this drive. I remember my old car stinking even though I still smoked When I got my new car back in 99 (yeah I keep them forever) it didn't have ash trays. Can't throw it out the window may start a fire outside or in back seat. Didn't want to get those bean bag ashtrays, so never smoked in the Silver Bullet(yep I name the car) so when I quit it was not a problem. When I'm in the car by myself I talk to myself out loud all about how well my quit is going. I tell myself any craves will pass, I tell myself I don't want to go through the first few weeks again. And I can usually get myself through the situation. The only thing I hope is that people don't see this batty woman talking to herself. Oh...and I love Werther's sugar free candies. And gum. I keep these in the car. I call it my emergency stash. Within a month of quitting, I had to do an 8-hour drive to Miami. SSC members gave me lots of great tips...including rewarding myself at certain mile-posts or after driving for an hour. Rewards were things like a walk at a rest area, a Chai latte (Florida's Turnpike has Starbucks at all its plazas), or a snack. It worked great! I also highly recommend audiobooks...the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was perfect for that trip. Sue, Did you use content or context reframes? I'd give you some of the best quotes from the tapes, but I'm not sure if I'm supposed to do that or not. I had to learn to re-frame some of my snappish thoughts, I really developed a lot of road rage while driving in traffic. Aloha, if only I had had some of your tapes!
