Weaning off chantix/Halfing the dosage?

wnt2bfree, the important thing is that what you are doing is working for you. You have a good quit going so keep doing what you are doing. I agree, the Chantix has been a huge help. Being a smoker for 40 years with a few failed attempts, I think it has given me the edge I needed. It's up to me now that I am on my on and I think it is going to be fine. Keep up the good work! I went to 1 pill a day (morning) after being on Chantix for 2 weeks. The pills made me sick to my stomach and I wasn't sleeping well. I noticed cravings in the evening when I would normally take my second pill and they lasted for about a week. I still get craves occasionally, but not as bad. I figured I needed something to do in the evening to keep me from thinking about smoking. I now excercise every night no matter what and I really don't think about cigs any more. I'm going to take 1 pill a day until they're gone but I don't think I'll need to get another refill. I know I couldn't have done it without the Chantix and I'm so thankful for my quit :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/8/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 41 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 697 Amount Saved: $172.20 Life Gained: Days: 3 Hrs: 17 Mins: 9 Seconds: 29

Alohakeia: I will definitely find the "Limbo song" :) I look forward to giving it a go, which will be entertainment enough itself ! I don't know what to make of the crave situation. Like you, what I have experienced the last few days feel like real craves though I know physically it isn't. However, if that's how it's gonna be then so be it. I'm not giving in. I may be irritable from time to time but I am not smoking....period. You are not too far from the beach yourself. So I will keep the limbo pole handy! Hunter: I think the dreams are a very common side effect. I had them when I first started the treatment even at .5mg a day and throughout the rest of the treatment. Like you, not nightmares but very vivid and sometimes unusual. Most of the time they were pleasant. Though sometimes they would wake me up several times a night. Your quit is going well so stick with it and be careful about pulling the plug too soon on the Chantix. PRB I agree with the 12 weeks recommended course of treatment. At least for me. if you read my earlier post summing up the studies they reported on in the accompanying literature, it seems that the longer the better. However, as others here have reported, stopping earlier seems to have been okay for them. I have had those increased urges, and yesterday an actual crave, for a number of days too. Not sure if it's the decreased chantix or that "3 month" thing. Hey, March Buddy..to the beach for you in two days! I know you won't smoke, because we need you for the fun and music. Can you find that calypso song about the limbo?...lol Hunter, If you've read through this thread, you've seen that some people have stopped sooner than the recommended 12 weeks. But, the literature that comes with the medicine recommends the whole course of treatment, or beyond. One of the studies had people deciding what dosage they would take, from .5 to 2 mg per day, and that seemed to be nearly as effective. I, and many others, have had the dreams too. So, if you're having side effects, you might want to consider that approach as well. But, as we are told here constantly, best to check with your physician or pharmicist. I think that having this support site, and your overall attitude towards quitting are equally important factors in remaining smoke-free. The main thing is, just don't have a single puff, and you will be alright. Congratulations on your great quits, both of you -aloha My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 88 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,520 Amount Saved: $598.40 Life Gained: Days: 12 Hrs: 8 Mins: 16 Seconds: 59

I've gone to just one pill 1mg per day starting on Monday and i haven't had any urges to smoke but I'm still dreaming a lot funny dreams not weird or nightmarish, I've had some joint pain but tolerable, this is my 4th week would like to just stop taking it altogether but not sure I should after reading these discussions, doesn't sound like anyone has stopped and had real problems I guess it is individual as each of us are, still have refills I think I'll at least try 4 more weeks just to be sure. I am starting to feel a lot better than I did when I smoked. I finished up with the Chantix last week. I was going to taper to one per day for the last week. I did this for about 3 days then decided to stop at that point. I couldn't really tell any difference in taking 1 or 2. I think I had 3 pills leftover and these were from missed doses earlier in the program. So basically I completed the program as planned with a minor tapering off for the last 3 days. I don't know the significance but my "cravings" increased about 10 days ago. I was still on a full Chantix dose at that time. I still seem to be at an increased crave level, not strong but persistent. I really don't know what to make of it. I don't think it has anything to do with completing the Chantix program. I have lost quits before in this 3 to 4 month window so I am being very cautious and talking to myself a lot. Not sure this helps anyone with their thinking on Chantix but I would probably recommend sticking to the program as designed since that's what the research is based on. 13th week of chantix..been taking .5 mg for a week. Still experiencing increased frequency and intensity of smoking thoughts. Am really glad I decided to wean off gradually. I don't think I would have done well going from 2 mg to nothing. Have added B complex vitamins starting yesterday. I think one of the reasons I am experiencing more urges is that I have had to curtail my usual physical activities-bodyboarding and strenuous yard work. I need that physical exercise. Still doing light gardening, a little walking. This will pass and I will not smoke, because I AM a nonsmoker NOPE -aloha My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 87 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,480 Amount Saved: $591.60 Life Gained: Days: 12 Hrs: 5 Mins: 18 Seconds: 47

Members, Although we recommend following the full course of treatment if you do feel that stepping down early is best for you, consult your pharmacist or physician to come up with a step-wise plan. Danielle - Bilingual Support Specialist

I even forgot to take it yesterday. Think I'll see how it goes with me from now on, going solo.
