For awhile there were several informative ads on t.v. about depression. Wonder where they went? Haven't seen them for awhile. Even though there certainly needs more funding and education for depression, I think it is out more than it used to be. Some doctors have more empathy and good bedside manner than others and really try to figure things out before prescribing meds, some just don't want to know, it's not their field. Either way when referred to a specialist in depression the wait for a consultation is usually way too long.
But even worse is the fact that there is information saying that depression weakens the immune system, leaving a person open to so many other diseases. On top of that depression goes hand in hand with so many diseases, both physical and mental depression. It also kills but in a different way. Why is it that dyeing by cancer after a long battle?, is so much worse than committing suicide after a long battle. Depression is still thought of as a house wife's disease, self inflicted and no one who isn't weak will get it. People still say it is hereditary because they don't want to admit that a lot of it is work place related. Funding for depression comes in the form of a short course every doctor of any sort takes so he can know when to pass out the Ativan. The other thing is that none of the nurses I talked to were given any training to spot or deal with depression. Even in the Psych ward they are trained to deal with mental diseases but still think that a few Ativan and depression should go away.
We are our own worst enemy. We don't want any one to know we have this where as a person with AIDS is shouting to the whole world "poor me" Cancer is so poorly understood that people think that if you get it you die. A lot of heart disease in the younger population is self inflicted but we fork out more money to fix it.
It is all a matter of government spending money where it will get the most exposure. I have my doubts that there will ever be money for prevention of depression. It will be up to people like you to do what you can and people like me to help by spreading the word that there is a cure. It doesn't help when a large part of funding goes for advertisement to get more donations so they can do more advertising. I will gladly spread the word if I can help just one other person and we all need to do it. We need to bring this out in the open. We need people to be able to say that is what is the matter with me and seek help, and they need to know where to get it. And we need to know that there is nothing more wrong with being depressed than having the flu.
Depression annually costs North America billions of dollars,
due to time off work, disability, treatment etc.The cost of depression is higher than the
cost of heart disease and second only to cancer. This being said it is baffling to note that
large organizations such as the Canadian Cancer Society, American Cancer Society,
the Heart and Stroke foundation exist to support individual and research
treatments; depression does not have high-profile organizations to fulfill the
same purpose.
