This is a poem "The Guest House" by Rumi a 13th-century Sufi poet.It was in a handout from my Mindful Meditation teacher.

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning is a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of  it's furniture,
still treat each guest  honourably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whatever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

"If our thoughts persuade us that our lives will always be like this
("This is just how I am") , then what started with pain or tension
or sadness is going to give rise to even greater suffering.
But if we're here for this moment, and in this moment, with these
thoughts and feelings and body sensations, and now in the very
next moment the mind's patterns are changed  in some way, and now,
changed again in the very next moment, events have a chance to
unfold in an entirely different way."

I have to read this over and over but it says to me that we can change
if we can change our thinking.

wildcat,

you are a hero - some of your ideas, insights and imagination are fantastic!  You are a hero to me!

as a kid did you read those awful books you-are-the-hero?  and you chose either go left at the fork in the road and turn to page 7 or turn right and turn to page 11....

I meant it a little in this sense as well as in... you are reading a medeocre 20$ book (like I am now) and the after 100 pages you know what is going to happen in 5, 23, 102, 300, 407, 529 pages?  and you give up?  well I take the the story idea and become the hero, the main protagonist and develope the story line so it is more interesting.  Dora the explorer does not just jump over the crocodiles to get away from the wicked witch.  I fall into the swamp after escaping from the mutant laser eyes witch.  I cannot combat alone, I need help.  So I run from from her in the late after noon as the sun is setting. Time is running short, night is dangerous here. As I think this, I can sense something in the water waiting. Close. Waiting.  Hungry.  ROAR.  Corcodile. Snap. It is so close I can feel it exhale in my face ....

you get the idea,

Hi Wildcat,

Thank you very much for sharing your strategies with me/us. Really interesting and I'd like to learn them too..
I just did n't really get how you mean you're the hero..(?) Can you explain that a bit more?

And of course, you're right. There is always a lot "food for the imagination" as you say... I just have to accept that I will always find things to worry about if I decided to go the way of worrying. And if I decided to go the way without worrying, then I have to be consequent and not constantly looking around for some "horror-stories" (citing you again  ).

Thank you for your appreciated input!

hi perth.

I was not too sure if i should jump in or not... sometimes I think yeah I understand that but I am way out in foul-ball  areas.

There are days when I leave my littles at school (it was worst at daycare) and I get on the anxiety express!!!  I hope the educators will be extra vilgilant today.  If a pedophile were to touch my litle angles I would.... then I go off into a million and one horror stories.
Or what if that construction zone near my husband's office hits the gaz line again. The fire department has cleared the area twice in 5 years if this time the area blows up .... more horror stories.
I work in the commercial area near the airport, so some plane cause vibrations in the building ... food for the imagination. And Planes landing 2 or 3 kilometers up the road also is food for nasty thoughts as are all the trucks and cars and crazies in traffic.

So I think I understand how the process of anticipation builds the anxiety.  I have been taugh to channel all this creativity into better story telling.  I rework or continue the story of the books I read and the fictional tv shows I beg to watch (my kids usually let me get fantastic 4 and x-men).    Otherwise i kareoke? in the car or at the office-photocopier. The copier and I have a steamy thing going on ...   I like the stories where I am the hero, because I have to make the ending a positive one.

Perth,

Like you said, it seems like you are concentrating on all of the negative potential happenings, as opposed to the positive ones. This makes sense, as it seems like you are preparing for the worst, but, it is exhausting! Try to focus on the positive. You are so helpful toward your family, so focus on the good times to come. Plan events, or a get together, give yourself something to look forward to. You are right, nothing ever seems to go as planned, and a lot of unexpected things can occur. But, you just need to learn to take these occurrences in stride. You have control over your thoughts, so when those negative thoughts about the future creep in, challenge them, and replace them with positive thoughts of the present and of what's to come.
We're always here for you Perth
