I have 7 days smoke free now. I find that keeping my focus on right now (or not thinking further ahead than how I will deal successfully with the next trigger / craving) makes me feel better than thinking about the long haul and how I will stay smoke free permanently. Thinking about the long term is tricky for me because I had 1 year smoke free before, then had a REALLY bad day, decided to have just one cigarette and ended up smoking for two more years. I don't know when the next really bad day will occur, and I can't sort through all the permutations of how I might react. It's just not helpful to try to predict the future. But I can handle thinking about 15 minutes from now and how I will respond when I face the next predictable trigger. I'm confident of what I can do in the immediate future. Once 7 days turns into a month, into a year, into two years, then maybe I will have more confidence to think about the long haul.
