Well, my cat, Agatha, in my avatar...is my best friend, as Freedon said..unconditional love is what she gives me.

However, I'm not at all sure that she helped me in my quit...but believe me, I most definately helped her...
she now sits in my lap for hours (because I am not jumping up and going outside every 30-45 mins) and she is becoming spoiled rotten...

Now, on the other side of that, I have a garage cat (Spot) that is very upset because I quit smoking, I would go out in the garage several times a day, sit, watch tv, have the heater or the fan blowing and pet him (which now I am not doing) so I have to remember to stop and pet him once in awhile or he just scratches at the door till I do .

This is becoming a double edge sword...I will have to work on.

I agree 100% that our pets are very theraputic.  There is nothing better than coming home and having your pet greet you with hugs and kisses.  I have one cat named Soda (will be getting more in the future but just one for now!) and the unconditional love that she provides melts my heart on a daily basis.  Early on in my quit, I had a bad day (well more than one but this was a particular situation!) and was standing in the kitchen doing something.  Obviously animals can sense our moods and they know if they should stay clear or try to change that mood.  Well this little kitty came up to me and just head butted the back of my leg.  It was the smallest touch that somehow made the biggest difference.  In that moment I realized how such a small loving touch can remind you to be grateful, loving, kind and gentle.  If this could change how I was feeling, imagine what as humans we can accomplish.  A hug, some kind words, etc can change someones day.  I immediately gave my hubby a hug to continue the experiment/experience.  I truly learned a lot from this simple act and am grateful that being an animal lover is part of my personality.  When I first quit I also committed to using my extra time that I saved from not smoking to play more with her.  I have done that a bit but not as much as I wuold have liked to.  I find I do have more time on my hands and really should take that time to play more with her.  I guess that's my New Year's resolution.

Hugs to everyone and their pets today!  xoxo

Hi members,

I've noticed many of you have pictures of your pets as avatars.  This makes sense as a lot of us consider our pets to be part of the family and a big part of our day to day lives; plus they are so darn cute!

Pets are also known to be theraputic .  How has your pet helped you with your quit?  Have they relaxed you, distracted you or even influenced your quit due to concern for their health?  However your pet has helped you please share here!
