Hello Joyfulspirit, That was a powerful post, I like the way you think. It takes a higher level of maturity and wisdom to not only recognize your weakness but be able to change your behavior and environment, when it's necessary, to allow you to continue being successful with the weakness. How many of us would give in to a situation, surrender to our weakness, ignoring all the reasons, logic and good sense? That's taking the path of least resistance because it requires less effort and discipline; ignoring the "D"s (disease, disability and death) because they're not here today and therefore not real. After all, it's all about what feels good today right? Here's a good one I read on another site: All things in moderation. You could pick this one apart in many different ways. Yes, moderation is important but in all things? Any level of poison is bad. There's no way to make smoking good; there are no redeemable qualities in smoking, that's junky think. Stay the course, N.O.P.E. There are precious few absolutes but...addicts won't stop at one. I see a high level of commitment and wisdom in your words Joyfulspirit. Thank you for your thoughts. Thanks Danielle! And Kiwi I'm definitely going to take you up on your challenge. I know a little about these things you've mentioned but I'm sure there's much more to learn! Drugs, neurotrasmitters, dopamine and seratonin...on my way to google it now :) Gotta love the internet! KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!!!!!!! U know I believe that FAITH, COURAGE, DESIRE & admitting that I'm weak will get me through this. And yes Mercy I do feel it but don't want to say it b/c I said it last time and believed it but it wasn't. So this time I'm not going to say it, I'm just going to do it! And thank you for the sweet compliment. U know it takes a person with a beautiful heart to recognize it in someone else :) You're maturity, experience and knowledge shines in your posts! Joy, You sound like a beautiful person with a beautiful heart. You post not only resounds experience....but a level of maturity. Knowledge brings success and I have spent much time learning about addictions...the mind and chemical reactions that occur in the body. Not only was it interesting...but for me.....it became ammunition in what I call a down and out "war" against cigarettes. I never was plagued with a desire to drink or get drunk, but because of cigarettes I do know addiction. Boy...do I!! I'm also a co-dependant person and loved the Book..."Co Dependant No more" I soooooo saw myself in that book. This is your final quit. Can't you feel it? This is it,,,your life. This is not a test...lol...this is not a dress rehersal :O We're here now and have no idea if we'll be here tonight or tomorrow. All we can do is grow up & take good care of ourselves. If we don't, then it won't happen, period. Addiction is serious so I'm not going to sugar coat this post. Being co-dependant to anothers feelings is not always the best thing to do especially when dealing with an addict. Sometimes we have to just put it out there and let others deal with their own feelings. Ok,,,yes I'm working on not being so co-dependant anymore in my life, lol. I do care, sometimes too much to where it can actually can hurt someone's progress. ADDICTION IS SERIOUS! There's a time to find humor in everything in our lives including addiction but in this post I'm not laughing. In my 11 yrs. of sobriety/recovery, I've learned so much about addiction and certain things that can and will hinder your quit. It's appropriate because addiction is addiction no matter what the drug of choice is. First, if you go to a barber shop enough times, eventually u will get your hair cut...in other words stay out of slippery situations such as bars or pubs, especially early into your quit. It doesn't take a brain scientist to know that it's not a good idea to be around smokers with only a few days quit. Not to mention it only takes ONE drink to cloud your judgement and will eventually lead u back to smoking. In time,,,yes you will be strong enough one day in your quit to start hanging out in places that have a lot of smokers but for now why on earth would u want to put yourself into that situation? Also, my personal opinion on quitting smoking is this...and many may not agree but that's why we all have our personal opinions, lol. My opinions however at least are based on a few yrs of experience :) Anyhow here goes...quitting "cold turkey" is a very hard & dramatic experience for the body to go through. It's kinda like jumping out of a 12 story window without a net. For me,,,the patch and wellbutrin(anti-depressant) are like taking the stairs down instead of jumping out of the window. I totally understand the obsession to smoke when quitting. We're giving up a way of living that helped us escape from our emotions. That's where the depression comes in...learning how to deal with our emotions can be very stressful in itself,,,much less than trying to deal with the physical effects that are happening with our body. This is why I personally choose to use the patch and wellbutrin. I made a decision (this quit) to NOT obesess over cig's this time, and it's making my life so much easier :) I don't even think about smoking until I feel a crave and then I "just breathe" deep in & out :) My quit is going wonderful right now!!!!!!! My breathing has improved and I have much more energy. There's nothing wrong with using the patch or an anti-depresant to help yourself through the quit. That's not to say I won't be in here whining tomorrow or a week from now, lol. Changing the way we think is hard too :O Aren't bars & pubs a main place to hang out, drink, relax, & smoke? And for the quitters that are having suicidal thoughts or depression why would u even think about drinking so soon into your quit? Alcohol is a a drug and is a depressant! And will cloud your judgement. It only takes 1 drink for your judgement to change and before u know it you will be smoking again, yikes! I'm just speaking the truth as I have seen not only in my own experiences but also from what I've seen happen to people around me, not to mention the topic seems to come up often right here. Addiction is a very very serious disease & not to be taken lightly. A nurse once told me that quitting smoking is more difficult that quitting heroine. Either way, all of us on this site know how difficult it is just to take the 1st step to quit! And then how hard it is to stay quit! So do yourself a favor and stay out of slippery situations or U WILL FALL :) It took me about 5 yrs after I quit drinking to be able to feel comfortable at a bar around alcohol and other drinkers. Same thing with smoking,,,u are your enviornment. And even now if I'm having a tough emotional day u won't find me in a bar (a slippery spot). It's much to hard for us addicts to quit, much less stay quit. So WHY RISK ALL YOUR HARD WORK JUST TO GO TO A STUPID BAR? And if you're depressed why on earth would u take a drug/drink that is a depressant? It's common sense. Give yourself a break and get really strong in your quit before putting yourself into a slippery spot :) If you don't have a problem with alcohol then this will not present a problem for you. The only person you have to be honest with is yourself. Be true to your own heart :) All I can share is what I've actually seen or experienced in my life. 11 yrs ago I was in a recovery home for 4mos. where they told us that only 1 in 10 would stay sober. That would be only 4 people out of the 40 that were there. Some are dead. In my experience quitting smoking has been much more difficult than quitting drinking was, and trust me when I say I loved to party and loved to drink & get drunk. Obviously life is better without drinking or else I would have started back by now. I believe the same thing with smoking. I truly believe in my heart that living without smoking is WAYYYYY BETTER than killing myself sucking in those poisons for the rest of my life. I had a year and 4 mos smoke-free & then I stopped coming to this site...BIG MISTAKE! This site is just like medicine. Take your medicine and stay smoke-free :) Help and be helped. All we have is GOD & each other. Ok so I'm a bit long-winded today, LMAO!!!!!!! WOOHOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! I'm determined "today" & happy "today" to be a non-smoker. I can only hope and pray that tomorrow will be the same. JUST BREATHE.......
