Generic celexa

Becky: It's jo again. I'm sorry I didn't read your response thoroughly enough. i see that you were on the generic for 3 months and it took you about 1 month to start feeling better again, right? I know all about Lexapro and wondered if the doc would switch husband to that for that reason also. We see him on Fri. and at this point my husband doesn't want to call him or switch anything, still wants to wait and give it a little more time. My husband is on 100mg. of seroquel to calm the nerves and help him sleep. I think that's in the same neighborhood as what you are taking. I think it cuts some of the jitterness of an antidepressant, so don't worry, the combination is common I'm pretty sure. Hang in ther. jo

Becky: This happened on a weekend and my husband originally talked to a psych doc on call, he told my husband: "This doesn't surprise me, I have had some other patients complain about the generic." My husband's regular psyc doc said that it is in deed possible that the generic doesn't work the same, as he has seen that phenomenon in some other drugs, although not yet Celexa (My husband was the first to report) However, when I filled his prescription at Shopko I asked the pharmcist and she said, "We have had lots of complaints already and people are switching back." As far as hormones, I think it's entirely possible that it affected you, although I'm not a medical person, but you should certainly report this to your doctor. How long were you on Celexa? How long did you take the generic? How long is it taking you to feel better? Thanks, jo

Hi jo, It took many of us months to get back to normal. I am just barely getting there myself. My doctor switched me to lexapro. I don't know if you are familiar with it or not, but basically celexa has two molecules and one has therapeutic effect and the other has the side effects apparently...so they have found a way to cut the molecule in half and put two molecules of the therapeutic stuff on there. Thus, its more potent and you can take a smaller dose. I was on 40 mg of Celexa and now I'm taking 10 mg of Lexapro. My doctor also put me on clonazepam (.5 mg) at night and in the morning and a small dose of risperodone (.25 mg) at night to help control my anxious thoughts. Before the medication switch I was feeling better...that was like 4 days ago. I was still anxious in the mornings. However, I must say I feel back to normal now, except just a little nervousness about the meds...I've never been on this many. However, I don't know if its the med switch or just that it was the generic that was screwing me all up before. I will say this, although I don't know if it applies to your husband, but the whole time I was on the generic (3 months) I never had a period...when I switched back to the regular, my period started within two days and has continued to be regular. So I don't know if the generic screws with hormones or what. It has been about a month since I stopped taking the generic so yes, it can definitely take time. I'm just curious...did your husband's doctor seem to think it was the generic???? I know most doctors out there and pharmacist INSIST it is the same thing...I was just wondering what yours said. Mine didn't really have an opinion. But that is my story...I'm interested in hearing more back from you....so let me know :) Becky

Hi my name is Jo-Jo and this is my first time posting. My husband suffers from major depression and anxiety. For years he had been afraid to take an anti-depressant (one of his phobias) but finally after lots of research on my part and wonderful counselor & psyc doc, he decided to take Celexa. After 4-5 weeks, he started to feel wonderful. He had been on it for about 5 months and doing very well. 6 weeks ago he switched to the GENERIC brand. 2 weeks ago he started feeling depressed again, anxious, etc. and wondered if it might be the generic, so his doc switched him back. He's been on the REAL CELEXA now for 15 days but still not feeling much better. Doc says it may take as long to feel better as he was on the generic (which was 32 days). I was beginning to doubt if this was the generic med or what until I came across this chat site and see that others have had problems with the generic too! It's a elief to know that it might be the cause of his "crash" because it can be fixed, but also makes me sooo mad and would like to report this to someone so this will be corrected. We need to ban together or something and so our voices can be heard! What can I do? I will of course ask his doc to make some correspondence or report this (if this does indeed prove to be the cause), but I and my husband should probably do something too. A specific question I have is:Have any of you experienced this change after going generic and it took a long time to come back? I know some of you said it only took days... Thanks, Jo-jo
