One person who replied said that medications effect people differently. The doctor cannot ever know how you feel. He is on the outside. No two people have the same reaction to the same drug, and that is all drugs, and not just these kinds of drugs. It takes a lot of patience to go through all the trials and tests to find the right medication, but your doctor has to take that time and have that patience. Your boyfriend, I believe, is only partly right. For ten years I refused to take medications for depression. I knew there was a natural and healthy way to deal with it. Now, I have been on Prazac for 3 months and I can see what no one could ever have explained or told me. It is not a magic potion, but it does help, and nothing else could have done what it does. Sometimes, you have to take medicine. That is part of nature too. All humanity from the earliest times looked for and has used medicine, and that is a miracle of nature too. There is no tribe, no society, no people anywhere in human history that did not prescibe medicine sometimes. Prayer, meditation, diet and exercise are all part of the solution too. We need support and friends and trust and care and we need psychotherapists who can and will give us the time we need to go through it all. God bless your boyfriend. Also, thank-god, we can take medicine. It is one of life's miracles, I believe. You do not have to believe in God to believe in miracles. Human beings have been using medicine for millenia, and it is part of nature too, I believe. One of nature's miracles.

You MUST get help from healthcare professionals that you trust. Options: Ask for a second opinion (preferably psychiatric), get a referal to a psychological therapist. The support from another professional can give you leaverage with your own doctor. General Practitioners see a lot of depression but are not specialists in its treatment Drugs on their own are unlikely to work. natural therapies can help, but beware your medical opinion is unlikely to be impressed. Be carefull with herbals and the like, thay are just drugs by another name and can cause side effets and interactions. Don't take second best and don't be bullied.

Hi. I have experienced a number of different medications and doctors over the years, so I feel I can offer you some perspective. It often takes a couple of trials with different medications to find one that works for you. The thing that they don't tell you, at least I don't remember hearing it, is that different people respond to different medications differently. Some people experience greater side effects on some drugs than others. There are some drugs that generally bring more side effects to everyone. Eventually, you will find one that does the trick. You just have to be patient, as hard as that is. I have had good and bad experiences with different medications. It does sound like you have not had any results with Paxil. I would ask the doctor about Lexapro as opposed to Celexa. It's a newer form of the same drug with fewer side effects. My psychiatrist has seen good results with a number of patients on this drug, including me. I really urge you to see a psychiatrist rather than a doctor, if that's what you're doing. Psychiatrists, in my experience, are much more aware of the issues with different drugs and the latest research. Hang in there.

Thanks for the advice...here's more. I went to doc's on wednesday and he dismissed my boyfriend who knows what has been going on since this whole thing started. I can't really believe that my doctor would do this. My boyfriend has been my rock and I have been telling him everything that was going on with me. My doc took me off of paxil because of the side effects and now wants to put me on celexa. My boyfriend doesn't like the idea of more medication and more side effects he would like me to do something more natural. Change my diet and my sleeping habits and try to make things better without the meds. Now I just don't know what to do....please help.

Hey! Hope you're doing ok. Some advice though: you are the best person to decide which medication and dosage works for you. Take it slow and take control - the Doctor is there for advice and for your safety. If you are having side-effects, tell the Doc you want to back off on the dosage? Who knows your emotional/physical state better than you!? Remember, these things take time. Trust your judgement.

Good Evening, Thanks for sharing your feelings with us today. Please feel free to roam the site at your own pace. If you look to the left of the screen under "TOOLS" you will find our Depression Test. This test is not a diagnostic tool and is not a replacement or substitute for a physician's advice. The purpose of these tests is to prepare you with information that you can present to your physician. When you're finished the test, you can either print your Final Report or email it directly to your doctor. You will find that there are many people who are willing to give you support and help you challenge your fears and frustrations. If you have any question or concerns with our site please contact Susanne or I at support@depressioncenter.net. We are the Support Specialist for The Depression Center and are open to any questions or concerns you may have. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Melanie

Hi. I am new to the site and am looking for some help. I was diagnosed with clinical depression 4 months ago and was put on Paxil. The doctor increased the dosage 3 times now because it doesn't seem to be working. The side effects now are preventing me from working. Headaches like I have never had in my life. My boyfriend has been great through it all however he wants me to be on something more natural. We argue all the time because of his opinion and it is hurting our relationship severly. My doctor doesn't seem to have a lot of time to spend with me and I can't seem to talk to him about other things cause I know I am keeping him from other people. This depression stuff is quite new to me and I haven't figured out the cause of it yet. I'm just looking for some help and support and maybe a little advice along the way.......Thanks
