Character Building

I think the definition of "character" which is mentioned, is the "good reputation", rather than the textbook definition of what makes a person recognizable or unique. Sometimes life's stresses are so great though, that people end up unwell. I saw a friend burn out through caregiving, so I'm trying to be more balanced in activities.

I do not know if Thoreau would agree. Study and comparison builds character. Where you do it is less important. Helen is right in that people should experience the world not just make assumptions about it from the couch.
Thoreau might also agree with me that achieving success doesn't always build good character if success is monetary only. Art is a fine example. dedication to ones skill builds character.

Apples and oranges have a different names for success and I am an orange.

Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved. –Helen Keller
