Snide comments from others

I'm a high schooler, so I guess I'm in a pretty different social situation from a lot of you who are adults, but I have a kind of similar story to add...about a month ago, when I had one of my first panic attacks, it was in math class, and I asked the teacher if I could go get a drink of water (just to get out of there). So I left the room, and managed to find my two best friends (who luckily had a free period then). They helped calm me down and about 20 minutes later I decided I had to go back to class, so I didn't get a cut for the class. As soon as I came back in, a kid called out (just loud enough for the whole class to hear), "Sheesh, leave some water for the fish!" The rest of the class thought it was hilarious, but it made an already hard thing a lot harder for me. I guess, like you've already suggested, people like her just haven't had the experience to understand something like this. I can see how that comment would have been funny under some circomstances, but if she had been through something like this she would have noticed that I wasn't just going out to skip class.

Hi Henna, I've had stuff like that happen. It can be very humiliating and quite a blow to my self esteem when it happens. Luckily it hasn't happened in ages. I've mostly had people say how weird it is, that they don't mind that I'm crazy and then of course there are the looks that these people give you. I think sometimes the looks are worse than the words. I tend to just ignore them and try to feel sorry for them for being such narrow minded people. I tend to think, well I have more intelligence than them because I've learnt more and am more understanding, they obviously haven't had much life experience! Taking that attitude helps me a bit!

Henna, People who act this why obviously do not know what it feels like to be in your shoes. The question here is how can we handle these rude comments? Do we say anything or just walk away? Has this happened to any other member here in The Panic Center? If so, how did you cope with these situations? Or did you just simply walk away? Please join in! For those of you who have trouble getting out, has anyone suffered snide comments and jibes from aquaintances when you actually manage it? I€™ve not told anyone about my problems, but living where I do, the fact that I don€™t go out much hasn€™t gone unnoticed. There€™s one woman who, whenever she sees me, makes loud comments like, €˜Hey, you€™re a long way from home!€™ €“ then proceeds to tell whoever she€™s with, €˜She never goes out, I think she€™s afraid,€™ etc. etc. Then recently I met two women who said, €˜Haven€™t seen you for a while. You ought to come and see us. You can always get your husband to drive you,€™ then looked at each other, sniggered and walked off. That€™s one call I won't be making! But comments like that are humiliating and can easily set you back. Anyone else suffered similar stuff? If so, how the hell did you handle it? Henna
