If politeness is about placing people at ease, then I don't think your remark, since it's self-deprecating humour, could be inappropriate. I'll have to thank an etiquette teacher of many years ago for her course, although it's never too late to practise civility.
Maybe if we were all more civil, there'd be fewer people who are unwell, as well as trigger-happy 3rd world countries who can't make dollar-store-quality-toys. My little world feels so much smaller with any mention of "nuclear" threats.
