Canscrapbook,

First of all, congrats on making the decision to call the mental health association! You should feel extremely proud of yourself. Seeking help is a huge step. Secondly, I am sorry to hear that you had such an awful experience. Please remember that we are here for you, 24/7, whenever you need us . In terms of your fear of leaving your home, please refer to the program, if you haven't already. You will find some great information and numerous exercises, tools and resources.
Stay close, and keep us posted on how you are doing,

Hi canscrapbook,

You seem to be taking all these changes in great stride!  Keeping a sense of humor is a must, and you are very good at that.

The problem with this disorder, at least in my experience, is that there are a lot of setbacks.  By that I mean exactly what your going through.  You were able to go out, handle all those things you handled...but a few days later you feel like your back at square one.  It's a very confusing challenge to have, anxiety.  But be sure to remember the things you have done, and that these setbacks are only temporary.  We all have days where we have to just accept we can't do anything to fight the anxiety, and have to just let ourselves relax (easier said then done!).  You can, and are doing very well.  Keep on keeping on with the great strides!

Cheers,

well its like I explained to my hubby, I have good weeks and bad weeks.
Last night was a high, I went for a 10 min walk (something I don't do) then I went to the drug store (I can usually do that) then popped up to the grocery store -never do that -and bought some vegies and signed up for their new points program.  Each time I came home in between.  I went out for dinner at a resturant 2 weeks ago for my dad's 50th (couldn't miss that) but the hole time I had it in my head I would not go until it came down to the day. and I kept telling myself I could do it and was their for 2.5 hours.  I came home and was amazed (not going to lie, it was hard) but now I feel like I'm in a rut again.
Especially when you are finaly willing to get help and can't.
I live in a small town that is very central to some of canada's biggest cities, you would think help would be falling on my door step.
I laughed with my friend last, she said she always saw me going into the field of helping people (I kinda thought maybe a high school councilor) so I said to her nope I think I need to get over this go back to school and get a degree in phyc. then go to peoples home who have this problem and work with them to get them out the door.

Yes I finaly heard from the one person I left a message for, she told me that they only deal with severe mental problems.  I guess being afraid to leave your home isn't severe!
So I'm back to square one!
Well I still I'm happy I left for a bit off and on last night and maybe I will get enough courage to see my family doctor and get going somewhere.
Oh and she (the lady who called back) did tell that me that the people I need to talk to are on the 5th floor at the hospital.  I never have liked hieghts and I am patrified of elevators! ( I walked 4 flights of stairs in full labour)  And I don't seem to like hospitals either since this has started!
I'm in for some real big changes! LOL

Hi Canscrapbook

I thought incompetent service like that was unique to South Africa LOL.

Shame. Sorry to hear about that. Please post here when you are feeling down. We will all try to chip in and help.

About leaving the house. I have never suffered from agoraphobia but I am sure that many here will be able to give you great advice. This program is (I think) very good for your situation. With exposure work you learn to challenge those feelings.

For now I guess you could try and leave for 1 hour 15 minutes. And then for 1 hour 30 minutes etc.

Trust me. These feelings will pass. You will slowly begin to take control of your life and your own emotions and behaviour.

So I hope this is where I can post this...

I wanted to take some steps yesterday, phoning the mental health ass. to find out what steps I needed to take (since I don't feel good about my family doctor after what happened last week).  So my friend who works basically in a social counselling atmosphere but for women and teens expecting.  She gave me a number to call, it happened to be a 24 hour crisis number the mental ass.  well I called 3 times (1:00, 2:00, 3:00) and no one answered that phone!  I thought to myself, that is a line for people who need help ASAP and no one answered and I would let it ring for a awile.  So I tried another number on 2 different ocassions yesterday and it was for an intake worker, the first time I left no message then called awile later and left a message (mid afternoon) and no one has yet called back!
I feel this is so frustrating when you are finaly ready to admit to yourself that you need help and no one is there for you, for all the questions running through yuour head etc.
So I don't like to leave my house since I feel so frightened to leave for longer then an hour but what am I to do?
