Please help me - I dont know how to get back on track

Hi ~m,

The cruise went really well, I was very concerned that I would fall off the wagon once I got with some old drinking buddies.
I laid my cards on the table right away and told them I had quit drinking because I was becoming a real glutton when it comes to booze.
There response was tell us something we don't already know and how can we help.
No way possible I would have gotten away with having a drink on that cruise once they knew.
There were Bill W meetings scheduled everyday on the cruise, I went four days in a row,but no one else showed up,so I can only assume I was the only one aboard working to stay sober.
Now if I could just invent a pill to cure stupid thinking when it comes my way

Best regards Don

Hi Don... Welcome back! How was your cruise?  How were you able to stay on track during your trip?  Thanks so much for your comments here... very helpful and gave me a chuckle too.  I love your no-nonsense approach.  I didn't really develop my own steps... just put all the things I've learned here together in a way that makes sense for me.  I offer it to Athena as I know from previous posts that we have similar struggles.  I imagine your method with be spot on for many folks as well.  It is so helpful to have quick reminders handy when we need the strength to get through.  I'm so glad you are back... I've missed your sailing ship :)

Well Done ~m
Just read your post.
It's like you have developed your own ten step program.
I think we all put together a way of trying to stay off the booze.

Mine is the stupid thinking method;

When I start thinking about having one or two drinks then stopping , I now know this is stupid thinking and try to find things to do,go to the gym, walk the grand dog, anything but drink and after awhile the urge goes away.( Lord knows how much junk food I have been eating, but I'm sober so far and that's what counts)

Also I used to think friends and family did not notice how much I was drinking, once again stupid thinking, since I have been sober for a few months they tell me how worried they were over my heavy drinking.

Athena keep trying it will get better as time goes by.

Athena, you asked,  how do I motivate myself to get through day one?????

Follow these ten steps:

1. Don't count days
2. Make a plan for quitting/moderating before you do it
3. Do not implement your plan until you do the following:
3. Start working  the CBT program in the Panic Center
4. Log in everyday to AHC and the Panic Center
5. Read lesson one and the education pages on both sites and begin using the diaries & mood trackers daily
6. Let go of the notion that you SHOULD naturally know and/or quickly learn how to do the program
7. Use the forums and/or blog.  Make an entry every day.  Complain, whine, ***** & moan, groan, ask for help, support, inspiration, ask questions, vent.... whatever.  Write if only to say, "I'm here, doing the stupid homework."
8.  Ask yourself:
Why should I put so much effort into this program?
What if I think this is a worthless program?
What will happen if I do all of the work and it doesn't help?
9.  Decide if you want to continue with the program
10. When you start feeling better...  amend your quitting/moderating plan... and begin agin

If you do one step a day, you'll be where you need to be in less than two weeks!

It took me nearly 10 months of using these sites before it started to all come together.  These particular steps and the order suggested are mine (culled from the information found here) but are not the "Official" AHC steps.

The book called Alcoholic Anonymous describes the state of an alcoholic:

The less people tolerated us, the more we withdrew from society, from life itself. As we became subjects of King Alcohol, shivering denizens of his mad realm, the chilling vapor that is loneliness settled down. It thickened, ever becoming blacker. Some of us sought out sordid places, hoping to find understanding companionship and approval. Momentarily we did - then would come oblivion and the awful awakening to face the hideous Four Horsemen - Terror, Bewilderment, Frustration, Despair. Unhappy drinkers who read this page will understand!
=============================================================================================
That was me, few years ago, but today with the help of the program of AA i am free man. I can go anywhere without the fear of picking that hideous first drink and then the phenomenon of craving that would lead to more drinks and eventually end up drunk. Please call the AA hot-line, there will be women ready to your home and help you.

Athena, Remember that you have been in this state of mind before.Hence the panic that you are in
Take a  look around you ,look how far you have come the work that you  been doing. It is impossible for this all to.
The drinking does not define you sure it trips you up. Go into safe mode. Do not get alone hungry tired. Most important love
yourself. So many people care and depend on you All the best Em

Hello Athena,

Know that we are here for you during this difficult time and that you are not alone. Please use the program to help you get through day one, go to the getting started section of the program and read through the first two weeks. Lean on your friends and family for support. I would also recommend going into your local community health center and tapping into your local resources. Stay strong and be motivated by your young beautiful children.

Members, how did you get motivated to get through the first few days?
