Best and worst day of my life

P.S. Many of you are way ahead of me in stopping smoking. FANTASTIC  (I mean it! - way to go!). That's really encouraging for me and others. I thought my smoking would be less when not intoxicated, but it's just as much or more (the whole compensation thing)....but to hear many of you already kicked that other habit is really encouraging.

Thanks a lot for your post, Hors Controle - the timing of your message was spot on for what I needed. I don't consider a glass or two of wine is a problem at all... but I'm struggling to contol my behavior beyond that, likely it is just too much temptation for my tender will-power at this point (for me, after 2 glasses, i get into the "want more" mode and lose control, so how do I stick with the one or two glasses, no more).

So your goal is now to control the consumption...that is a great and challenging goal, and maybe even harder than not drinking at all for 6 weeks. Let us know how it goes for you day by day. Be very careful...call on us if you need encouragement. And of course share your successes with us. :-) . You can do it! I look forward to your updates on your experiences. You are a star!

Hi Everyone,

I am working now on the second part of my goal, that is to learn to control my drinking.

I have been 97% clean for 6 weeks and I think I managed to break the habit. It really helped also that this time I really, really wanted to stop and really change my habits. Also, the fact that my boyfriend has also decided to reduce on his drinking helps a lot. I have not felt any envy yet, he can drink and I can't, and I don't think it will happen this time.

I have to be extra careful though. The last time I tried to quit, I did not go drink free long enough to change my drinking pattern. Also, I had more drinks so I kind of lost control. After 4-5 drinks, it seems I didn't care if I got back to drinking, I would be fine the next day BUT I was not. The cravings started again and the drinking followed.

Keesu I think it is very good that you have quit at least the hard liquor for a month. I think this is part of changing the pattern. The thing is not to compensate with something else and I think if you feel OK drinking some wine so you don't feel punished, it is OK. It took me one year to quit smoking. I bought a pack and a bottle of wine, or two and when the wine was empty, I threw the cigarettes in the garbage. It worked, altough my friends were joking I was drinking more and more wine, lol but it worked. It has been almost 15 years.

You will find what works best for you. Trial and error...

Hi Hors Control and Jbblue and Rayoflight, and all other friends here,

How are you guys doing?

Here's an update on me...
I've successfully met my 1 month goal of completely cutting out the hard liquor, haven't been to the liquor store at all and am really happy for this accomplishment - it is a big start. That said, I didn't put restrictions on my wine intake and sometimes over-do it past the point where I can say no and so have another and another heading to get that buzz feeling. That's defeating the whole purpose and overall goal, I realize that. So I'm evaluating my next step goal - either limit the amount, or maybe I should just say no completely. I'll seek to learn more about the cravings that even a single drink can trigger. If that one glass can help me stay on a better track instead of giving up, or if it does more damage than good and sucks me back in, that's what I have to figure out. Maybe you have personal stories to share in regards to limiting versus abstaining and what worked or didn't for you?

Hope you are still enjoying the travels down the better path, and staying strong through the challenges. We are smart, sensitive people and have it within us to do this, I'm certain! :-)

Hi Keesu and JbBlue,

I am doing fine. I have'nt drink except those 2 glasses of wine at my mother in law on mother day and I think it was more for not embarassing my boyfriend.lol.So it would be 32 days. I keep active. Even my boyfriend is trying today not to have is pre dinner beer and he finds it difficult to break the habit, especially while barbecuing.

So you play soccer. I played one season and hurt my knee. I just figure I should leave this to younger people.lol.

So how was soccer JbBlue? How was the weekend for both of you?

Good for you, Jbblue! Keep going!

I'm doing well, feeling good about sticking to my goal. But I knew that there were going to be challenges - been having to face the consequences of damage already been done - like not remembering conversations I apparently had with others, and people being hesitant when dealing with me. I also still have to face those issues I was running from. But I'm ready to work thru it - one day, one step at at time, and sober.

How was your soccer game? How'd it feel to play again?

How's it been going with you, Hors Control?

Hors controle you're on day 33? That’s really inspiring :)  I’m still going strong since my Mother’s day mishap. I’m ready to face the weekend. I have my first outdoor soccer game of the season and I'm really looking forward to it.

How are you doing Keesu?

Jbblue,
So you had a bad day, reflected on it, then let it go and started new again - I love that! I think writing down the benefits of not drinking is a great idea - three pages later you surely must have refreshed your ambition. :-)  I also think your physical training is a real positive action - not only are you going back to the old you and things you love, but that type of training also takes a lot of self-discipline - so I would guess that your accomplishments for physical workout can only assist in transfering your self-control and self-determination with this goal here also.

Thanks for your thoughtful update. Write again soon and often!
