Hi rayoflight,

And like Kelly so rightly said, I am here to Welcome you to the AHC support group. You've decided that you've had your last drink, now this program is here to help you stick with that. Your first step was admitting that you can't continue this way and deciding to make a change.
The next step is to start working through program, a big component of it is learning about yourself so you can better understand your addiction.
Start reading through the forums. I think you'll find there are many people out there you can relate to. The forum is also full of advice and will offer you the wisdom of many diverse experiences in relation to alcohol addiction.
Check back soon and let us know how you're doing. We're always here to answer any questions you may have or to provide you with some feedback.

Kelly has provided you with some really great first hand tips so take what you can from those.

Members, care to share tips on how to get started? What should rayoflights first step be?

hi there and welcome,

I'm sure any minute now one of the very supportive health educators here will post a message about how to use this site and it's information to start your journey of recovery so I'll leave it to them.

I've been using this site since April and began a day program in my city for treatment in August and I have been doing really well. I found it impossible to quit without support. It's really encouraging to have this forum full of people sharing their struggles and triumphs and to have somewhere to express my thoughts and feeling with no judgement.

My 2 cents on where you should go from here... Get all the booze out of your house and let those close to you who you trust know that you are quitting and you need their understanding. Journal your thoughts and emotions as you will most likely go through a roller coater of emotions. Be kind to yourself, don't beat yourself up about past events it will just make you feel bad and want to drink again. And this was a big one for me... don't pick up that bottle again thinking you can handle drinking more responsible or "this time things will be different". They won't. That's the addiction talking. Stay the course even if it feels bad at first. Things will get better and as time passes those people who matter will see your efforts and slowly come around. The most important thing though is to do this for yourself.

Good luck!

Hi all,

I am new, I just joined the site. I had my "last" drink last night. I need to quit drinking, I keep hurting people around me and soon I feel like I will be all alone. My friends and family are done with me and I need to do this for so many reasons. Where do I start? What is my first step? Can anyone tell me where to go from here?

I want to be the ray of light....
