just checking in so i can finish recording my first week. i guess yesterday was the hump where i almost let myself go buy a pack. and after i woke up this morning, the first thought i had was being so glad i didn't give in to that craving. i guess the thought passes my mind maybe 5 or 6 times a day, but with virtually no intensity. so just getting through the weekend and new years eve and i'm starting off 2019 as a nonsmoker. :)

Hi Carpediem,
 Shazzan gave you some great words of wisdom and it's true.  "With the right mindset, it is possible to escape the nicotine monster with relative ease". Once the physical withdrawal is over, in roughly 3 days, the mental part of the quit takes over. If you have the right mindset it is doable. Next time you get an urge, put the dogs on a leash and go for a nice long walk with them, while inhaling the fresh air smoke free! 
 Hang in there, you're doing great and almost have a week under your belt already. Stay strong and watch out for those triggers.

Wow, I love this: "You once were a non-smoker; you can be again." Such a simple, obvious truth but one that I didn't quite realize. Very powerful.
 
So I smoked my last 3 puffs on the 24th. I'm confused about which day I'm in. I thought it was 4 but my meter is saying i'm in day 5. so i'm going with that. :D
 
anyway, almost went and bought a pack today. actually got in the car with the dogs, but turned to take them to run instead of turning toward the store. made a mental deal with myself. will hold out for 10 days and see how i feel. i'm figuring when i get to 10 days, i won't want to blow it. and i'm pretty sure it takes 3 weeks to develop new habits. so at that point i should be halfway to home free.
 
let's do this guys. is anyone out there in their early quit with me? would be awesome to quit together. :)

There is nothing to fear but fear itself.  Fear will paralyse you and hold you back from accomplishing anything. Knowledge is power. Overcome the Fear with Knowledge. Embrace becoming a non-smoker and stop fearing it. You were once one, you can be again. Smokers will be jealous of you for having the courage to take the steps they cannot. Believe in yourself and you will do just fine.

Day 3
 
I wasn't able to log in all day until now. But the thing that really struck me is that I got through the morning without any cravings. I really thought mornings was going to be the toughest part for me; but as it turns out, it's the afternoon. But this is not like my first quit about a decade ago.
 
When I first quit, I was bad. I'll admit it. I would go to the supermarket and see if anyone threw out half a cigarette so I could just sneak one or two drags without buying a pack. How pathetic is that? I guess a pack a day for 30 years becomes pretty ingrained. When I went outside, I didn't know what to do with my hands. It was like every facet of my life was wrapped up in smoking.
 
This time around, it really is mind over matter. Cravings are not even close to what they were the first time around. Maybe I'm just more motivated this time. But they only last maybe 15 seconds and then it's over with, maybe 5 or 10 times a day. I got this :)

Awesome work getting through that last craving carpediem!

Coffee is a huge trigger for many quitters. Some people have found success in switching things up until they are more confident in their quit. For example, some people will drink tea containing caffeine, a smoothie containing ginger or just a big glass of water in replacement of coffee. Switching up our patterns is sometimes just the little change we need to take the edge off the craving.

I do not recommend vaping. Vape pens of contain a lot of junk that may not even be listed on their packaging. Also, there is no evidence that they help people to quit smoking. If anything they reinforce the hand to mouth habit and keep people addicted longer. I encourage to only use quit aids that have evidence that they are effective in helping people to quit smoking.

I think i'm going to use this thread as a public diary for the first few days. i'm guessing that it may encourage others to follow along and, while i'm doing the cravings diary for my own benefit, i'm not really sure if it's public. so day 2 cravings seemed to hit me a lot stronger than day 1. but they still only last for about maybe 20 seconds that i need to distract myself --- jolly ranchers and playing a lumosity game on my phone does the trick.
 
but there's another part to this that i can't quite articulate. i think it's the ritual i'm missing - sitting down with a cup of coffee, lighting a cigarette and taking that first puff. so i just heard a commercial on the radio for juul. never really thought about vaping, but it suddenly sounded very attractive. i could go for one good drag. the fact is, though, that i'm more motivated to stop today than i am to have to drive somewhere, find juul, then figure out what to do with it. i don't like anything having control over me -- especially something i consider a self-destructive and unattractive habit. so i'm good for today.
