Hi Bill : ) Amen to education & support!  One thing different for this quit compared to all my previous attempts is that I used to believe I had enough willpower to tackle quitting on my own.  I never signed onto a support group because (back in those days) I thought it was a sign of personal weakness for me to rely on 'virtual strangers' to make this 'simple' lifestyle change.
I have been hugely educated to the superior value of a support network that comes complete with coping strategies, wonderful moderators & quit plans that work! I've also been totally surprised, moved and greatly humbled by many SSC members' incredible support and compassion found here.
Now when my husband lights up (outside thank you very much) I either leave (to come here to read or post!) or wait 'til he finds some mouthwash before we resume our time together.  He smokes much less now too : )
Thanks for your support and friendship too Bill : ) Eyja

Eyja : Yea I know what you mean by wary. We both had those perfect storms take us out in the 9th inning. But you know...I feel like I'm going all the way this time because I am a lot more thoroughly educated on the subject of nicotine addiction. I feel that is key because there is just no way to kid myself anymore.
To test my resolve I ask myself .....if I were diagnosed with cancer today and told I had only months to live would I go back to smoking? I honestly don't think I would. I genuinely enjoy this way of life so much better.
Thank you Eyja for you support and friendship. You are a special kind of Lady and I am proud to know you.

Your Friend,
Bill

Willis; Thanks for your nice reply : )  I appreciate it very much.
To follow up on your lighter note; WooHoo - 7 Months Quit is great! You're doing a fine job of honoring your N.O.P.E. vow! We're so glad you're here at SSC to share this great news and inspiration with us!
I'm only 1 short week away from 8 mos Quit now!  I don't intend to blow it, but am wary this time around!  So far so good! I'm proud of sticking to my NOPE vow too.   Eyja

Thanks Samantha,  It is strange; a good friend of ours was found dead in his beach front home at the age of 58.  The last time we saw him he was just retiring at the early age of 55!  (everyone's dream, right?!)  With a real estate (mini) fortune amassed in the Kootenays & a girlfriend living in the Virgin Islands, we thought he was one of the luckiest men in the world!  3 years later, we hear that he'd fallen into depression, cut all ties with friends, picked up for drunk driving, vehicle impounded, and was holed up in his beach house, drinking alcohol and smoking like a chimney. But no one intervened!  He was allowed to drive (had a # of vehicles) to the liquor/smoke store to stock up!  How devastating; this news! We can do no more now but send sympathy to his family! This is an example of how terrible news like this seems to fuel my  (crazy) desire to smoke /drink to drown my sorrows! I don't trust myself sometimes, because I don't get this part of my addiction! In response to your questions:
"What coping mechanisms can you implement?"
1) POST here 'cuz it keeps me honest!  2) Don't drink!  i.e: No Wine; No Smoke!  3) Get enough sleep 4) Tea
"How will you reward yourself for staying smoke free?"
1) Give my hubby & kids big (smokefree) hugs  2)  Give my kitty a hug  3) Take my dog for a walk : ) 4) Thank you for your support (again!)    Eyja

Hi Eyja, It pains me to hear that you are sad. Please know that all your friends at SSC are always here for you.

On a lighter note today marks 7 months since I first vowed to never take another puff. I have kept that vow and intend to honor it every day that I have left on this earth.

N.O.P.E. is my mantra

Hello Eyja,

Do what you must to protect your quit, even in time of difficulty you must stay strong. Refer to the online quit program, keep posting often and know that we are all here rooting for you!

What coping mechanisms can you implement? How will you reward yourself for staying smoke-free?

sadness overshadowed my day but i didn't smoke.  it doesn't feel like any big accomplishment though. a nice glass of red wine with a vanilla tipped cigar at the end of a day like today is how i used to cope.  but i will write this 'note to self' (aka; SSC & world!) instead.
