I will not smoke today. I will not smoke tomorrow.

Since the desires have been both shorter and weaker, my main strategy is to simply redirect myself. Usually the "crave" is well under a minute. Sometimes it's a single stray thought, lasting only a few seconds. So I usually have short mental statements like, "No, I'm not going to do that.," "Move on to something else now," or "Time to put my attention elsewhere." In many ways, it is like managing a child who is nagging for something he/she wants. The child has been asking a lot less frequently, and more readily accepts a "no" with a redirection right now. I truly hope it stays that way.
Right now, my motivations for keeping the quit are: 1) I don't like to fail. That's why it took me so long to even get around to quitting. I especially don't want to admit defeat to those who have been supporting me. 2) I don't want to have to go through detox again. That was a sufficient life-learning experience for me. 3) I like the freedom I've felt since I quit. ...There are, of course, all the gory health reasons, but that's not where my focus is right now.
Great to know that your craves are diminishing in frequency and intensity. What do you generally do when you feel a 'desire' coming on and how can you improve upon your coping strategy even further, if at all? Also, what are your motivations for keeping the quit? Reminding yourself of these standards and goals will help keep your resolve fresh!
I am so impressed with the walking program. Knowing that you are also improving your health with the walks has got to feel good.
Sonia,
I did fine with the rest of the day/ evening. I had one other desire late in the evening. So 2 mild "craves" in a day. Not too bad. I rated my cravings yesterday as a "1" on the 1-10 crave scale. that's generally what it's been averaging for a few weeks now. A few 0's, s few 2's, but mostly 1's. I'm not sure that they are really "craves" anymore, as that seems to better describe the sensations I was having during physical withdrawal. I think of them more as "desires" now.
Everyone,
Oh yeah, I forgot. It's time again to pledge to not smoke today.
You're doing GREAT! Starting your morning off by logging on and making your daily pledge is a great way to start the day and continue the commitment you've made to yourself.
Keep taking it one step at a time, you are nearing the top of that mountain!
Well it's day 62 and I am happy to report I am still smoke-free. There is really nothing magical about the cruise ship Sonia, except that it is a positive way to take the mind off nicotine. It is not real of course but can be a pleasant past time..
Anyway back to the reality..Morning is the hardest time when it comes to my old nasty habit of smoking..To take my mind of smoking in the mornings and change my old negative routine I come here and post a pledge stating that "I Will Not Smoke Today" this helps and the cravings lessen and than I move on and try to do something physical every morning..I have been walking most every morning and using a pedometer to counts my steps, distance, and heart rate. I try to get in 5 thousands steps most days and on some days I am out and about for hours and get in 10,000 steps..
Keeping my mind and body busy doing or thinking about something positive helps me the most..This is where the magic comes into play...During this time I hardly ever think about smoking..
Great job not giving in to your cravings! You are right that the feeling is transitory. I'm so happy to see that you're keeping the smoke-free pledge. Please let us know how your evening goes.
