Oh I did fail on my previous attempt, SerenityNow. Everyone was right. I'm just back after an absence (during which I went back to smoking a pack a day) of several months.

But, it's Day 6 right now and I'm still going strong! Woohoo!

I ended up at an impromptu get-together - beers, a backyard fire, me and three smokers. And I DID IT! :) It was my strongest craving of the day, but I didn't give in.

Hi Ready2Quit,

Since this site isn't intended for medical/medication advice it is best to trust the advice of your pharmacist or talk to another pharmacist or doctor for another oppinion.

A quick question for one of the health experts...

I spoke with the drug store pharmacist at length about what I should do. I went in wanting the patch and the gum, in a single system, and she said while the guidelines have been relaxed to allow that in the States, it's not the case in Canada.

She said she recommends people take off the patch before going to sleep to avoid the common side affect of odd dreams. She said, if I do that, then there's no harm in having the gum to immediately satisfy the first craving of the morning and then adding the patch.

I said I'd still want the gum for cravings throughout the day and asked what the dangers were. She said it could affect my heart, cause it to race - and it's not a joke. But she said anything is better than having a cigarette and as long as I don't intake too much nicotine, I'll be safe. It's not like I grow a third eye or anything.

So, that's what I'm doing.

Any problems?

I've made it since late last night. :) I LOVE the patch. It's so... steadying, calming. Fantastic.

I'm still taking breaks outside with smokers - on a previous attempt I did it and found it... lonely, almost... after a few days. I've been taking out a piece of gum with me just in case I get a craving but I haven't really. The only time I've felt what I would call a craving was sitting at my desk about 20 minutes ago. I decided to go and get lunch instead.
