DON?T!

13 years ago 0 206 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Thanks for the kind words.  The trainer was a few minutes late, took one look at me just waiting to slap him around if he got the least bit chipper, and was like, "Um, all we really to do today is talk about some options and see if we can set a schedule."  I was like, "Darn right, Bucko."  And then he said he'd call me tonight with his schedule, but just like every other man I know, didn't.

Just as well; I'll be in a better position to cope with his muscle-bound good cheer next week when I get back from (get this!)  Mahwah, NJ.  My daughter was like, "Whatever else you do there, PLEASE get me a t-shirt that says Mahwah.

Anyway, spouse and I went to sort of a cocktail party for new church people (long story), and while it wasn't exactly my thing, it was totally cool to be able to talk to all of these people and not even think about what I smelled like.  Even better to stay as long as spouse wanted to without getting all pi$$y about getting a cigarette.  Even BETTER not grabbing for one as soon as I hit the car (my nice CLEAN-smelling car!!), and best of all to come home and not head straight for the balcony to smoke.  So many benefits, so little time.

Thanks for all the help.  I won a day today, thanks to you.  Day 1, but it's enough for me.

Good Job Peteg!!!

Personal Trainer eh? ... Now this I want to hear about ... if you can still talk after he/she has finished with you!!!  Keep at it Mister ... today is a winner

I think I have already mentioned ... but just in case y'all think I am a bit nutty when I talk about mornings/evenings ... that you haven't even reached yet ... this is because I am five hours in front of you - it's already almost 6.00pm here in Belfast ... but I only LIVE in Belfast ... I am a Scots woman through and through!!

Well Peteg ... let me know if you slapped the buff trainer (what was that you were saying about jealously being an ugly word?  ) but lets hope that your all psyched up and motivated for the weekend.

Luv Lil x

Hi Peteg,

I am sorry to hear you have had a slip.  However, I feel kind of silly saying sorry because it seems like this slip was essential in reaffirming your commitment.  It sounds like you have learned a lot due to this slip and due to the support of the amazing members of SHO.  Use this insight to push you farther!

I love the Won a Day idea!  I think this will be great motivation for members to fight this addiction one day at a time but also to post here often.  Posting in the forums regularly really helps members stay supported and stay quit.

Keep on fighting Peteg!

It was, Lil, and I felt bad that I might have mis-conveyed what you actually said; it was so positive, and "jealous" is such a negative, ugly word, even though you used it in a wonderful way.
Anyway, after a spectacular crash-and-burn last night, I am SO SICK today that the very idea of a cigarette (and we won't even TALK about a glass of wine!) is utterly revolting.
I'm actually smiling at myself today, because I think last night, coupled with those great insights from the pros, was a real turning point for me.
I have my first appointment with a personal trainer at our local gym this afternoon; I just hope I can actually walk in there, as opposed to stumbling in there.  Of course, one look at his clear eyes, buff body, cheerful sadism, and happy-go-lucky attitude will make me want to slap him silly.  Can't wait.

Peteg

I think it was me who was the 'jealous one' from your post below (typical!) and although I would love to have that buffer of several hundred hard earned smoke free days under my belt ... I do take the point that your quit is only successful if you didn't smoke TODAY.

What about today for you? ... is it a winner?

Let me know how things are ...

Hey peteg  The "won a day" club. Sounds good to me. Count me in. I can imagine that cigarette must have been a blast after a few days without one. The big light head. lol  I respect your honesty though. It takes courage to admit a setback. I'm like anybody else here in being a cigarette away from a pack a day so I do understand about it. Tomorrow's another day. I'd like to see you succeed at this so if you don't leave you won't have to stay away so long. It isn't even a question of success or failure it's about a drug called nicotine that's bigger than me. So don't be a stranger pete. breather

Okay, so I just logged off and was going to call it a night (after one of the worst days of my life), but had to come back on to do two things, neither of which I want to do.  First, I confess that I blew my quit.  But that said, I'm still here with some fantastic insights from other people.  Breather just posted a thing about not unleashing the addiction.  PERFECT language.  Me, I needed to relieve a little pressure, the addiction was pushing SO hard against the gate.  You'd think after a gazillion quits, I'd know better.  Maybe this time.
You CAN'T release "a little pressure."  He/she/it is either behind bars or loose.  There's no wiggle room.  It's in or out.  We gotta keep him in at all costs.

The other thing Breather said not long ago in response to someone who was jealous (in a good way, I'm sure) of his and someone else's longevity was that he was no better than anyone else and had, essentially, the same stats of most of us on a given day:  one (more) day smoke-free.  Like any addiction, it's one day at a time.

That leads me to the second thing.  There's a thread talking about an old club that (because of typos) goes by a couple of different names, having to do with one's rear end.  It sounds like a hoot, but also in that thread was a gem of an idea from Tresa, who talked about doing it one day at a time, which made me think of won day at a time.

I'm perfectly happy to reset my meager (oops, we're in Canada, eh, I meant meagre) quit meter to Day Zero and pledge with Breather to keep that cursed gate SHUT at all times no matter what, and NEVER unleash the addiction again, ever, under any circumstances, knowing that you can't "release a little pressure."  I'd also like to see if there is any interest in celebrating the "Won a Day" victories, where for one crummy little day, we actuallty won.  That might be enough for us, for now.

Any interest in joining me in celebrating Won day at a time?  I accept the embarrassment of going back to Day Zero because Breather was like, "We're all in one day at a time mode here."  Sorry if I'm misquoting him, but that's what I remember of his post. Me, I'm in, even in the midst of failure and on the cusp of a stressful weekend.  I could wait until Monday (like I did that last time, wimp that I am), but now I'm all about locking the gate the good and celebrating the daily wins.

Anybody in with me?

pete
