Hi Sheila , Welcome to SSC and Congratulations on your quit. I think it is very possible to quit smoking and loose weight at the same time. I'm on day 73 of not smoking and I lost 5 pounds.
When I get cravings I drink a lot of ice cold water, the first month I had a glass of water by my side all day long. I also exercise when the cravings get to strong it helps relieve all that anxiety and also helps with the weight loss.
The best of luck to you. I"m sure with lots of will power you will be able to achieve your goals....

Hi and welcome! Shiela, try and making quitting your first priority. Sure you can try and incorporate a weight reduction too, but quitting smoking is by far the best thing you can do for your body.
Yes in some cases quitting makes us gain a few pounds, however, they can be lost and really we just substitute the cigarettes with something naughty and edible! So, making healthy choices in that respect could help.
Dont let people tell you that you 'can't' do all those things, maybe it wont be possible but maybe it is. But please, make the quit smoking first on the list.

I certainly think you can do both. I wanted to quit because i wanted a healthier life all together, not just smoke free. I also have two kids, both teenagers and I want to be able to keep up with them and participate in activities without wheezing or stopping for a smoke break. I know someone who when they quit exercised every time they wanted a smoke. I did that my first few weeks and it was amazing. Mostly I would just go for a walk but it really helped my cravings and curbed my irritability. I did gain some weight because I was eating more, but now after a few months I am not eating as much and still exercising almost everyday. I think for me the most important aspect of not smoking is that "all over" healthy feeling. I am getting there and I know you can too.

Welcome to the SSC! Loads of good advice so not much I can add but to let you know on the weight gain thing...I did gain weight and it bothered me at first. Now my mantra is 'I'd rather be a pudgy non smoker than a smoker!'

Welcome to the SSC SheilaM! We have all been where you are right now and this common cause sure helps with our individual quits. I smoked for 42 years and in the beginning had to focus all my attention on just maintaining my quit. Quit now and make those wonderful children proud and then maybe stick around to see your grandchilden graduate from college!

Welcome, SheilaM. I don't have much to add, besides it may be difficult to quit smoking and lose a significant amount of weight at the same time. When we quit smoking our metabolisms actually slow down, so we usually gain about eight pounds. Munching on veggies--be careful of the fruits-- and sugar-free candy can help keep the weight from coming on. In any case, you can lose the weight later. You'll probably find that it is easier to lose some weight than it is to quit smoking. Quitting smoking has to be done perfectly; no slips. You can slip when dieting and not lose much. You might want to set a priority. I'm trying to lose weight (I've been quit almost a year), but maintaining my quit has priority.

since i am close to a newbie too and have just recently went through all the ruff parts let me help you with your concerns...
1. don't do both... quit smoking 1st... allow a little weight gain, be proud of accomplishing the first one, trust me i only gained 5lbs but ate whatever i wanted and "let" myself gain weight because when you start to feel good guess what happens, you start to crave working out! Eating healthier...and you will glow on the new outlook to the different healthier you!
2.work smoking - oh yeah tell me about it- i choose a time that was a bit of down time but that is hard to find for me...i also choose to quit sat and took off monday- giving me those three days to not have to deal w. work while going through the "hardest" time. Think about this but don't let that change your mind... it was just my way of telling myself that it's not work or stress that is making me smoke over a pack a day...it's me and the addiction...i know almost a mth later get more done have greater concentration...and do "crazy stress time" with easy instead of o.m.g i smoked a million cigs and feel sick
3.sorry so long, just wanna help...tell everyone! I don't know you but all of my previous quits i kept quiet incase i failed... this one i told EVERYONE...my thoughts if you started w peer pressure i let peer pressure help me quit...including letting down the stranger on this site which i was obsessed with the first week+more...also, be proud of EVRY step...even if its making it 4 days...we will be proud of you cause we know what its like!!!
