Remember when....

You would drag yourself outside to smoke a cigarette even though you didn't want it?

You would direct the puffs of smoke straight up, or frantically wave your arms throughout the smoke thinking it would keep
the smell off you?

You would think to yourself that if you walk by someone slowly enough, they could not smell the cigarette stench on you?

You would cock your head sideways to help keep the smoke out of your eye?

You wasn't quite sure if that ciagrette you threw out was put out so you have to go back to be sure? Once I walked out into this open area to smoke, and shortly afterward, I became so paranoid  as the weather conditions were very dry and I "thought" I saw the grassy area smoking! I panicked and went back to try to find my "butt".

You were paranoid that everybody was staring at you because you were smoking?

You wondered why people made such a big deal out of smoking anyway?

You thought spraying yourself with perfume would hide the smell?

You would get too much nicotine just before walking into a public place and desperately trying not to stagger, and the stares from people who thought you were drunk?

You suddenly realized you were out of smokes!! Oh, the desperation, so you frantically search in hopes of finding one, just one to hold you over till you can get to the store.

You would try to find something to shield you from the wind so the wind wouldn't smoke your cig? But if it did, then that was a great excuse to go have an extra one.

Coming up with enough change to buy a pack of smokes?

If your plans didn't provide any time for a smoke, then you wasn't interested.

Smoking was allowed in hospitals? In your hospital room/bed?! Then you'd get the dickens from your doctor when he saw the ashtray filled with butts lying next to your bed? Hospitals provided ashtrays!?? Geeesh! That's just weird.

You HAD to have cigarettes on hand to have a phone conversation.

Telling our children to NEVER start smoking, while we stand there with a cigarette between our fingers. Something is seriously wrong with this logic.

Looking back on all this now just makes me shake my head in disbelief at how much I used to let nicotine control my life. These things seem so stupid now that I see it for what it is.
It's MY life and I took it back. I am the one in control now.
