30 days / BAD CRAVINGS

16 years ago 0 1890 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Sorry about your stressful day Beckylynn... you will get over it like you have done with all the other cravings over the lst 30 Days!! You must give yourself a big present for that milestone and as a reminder of how you have been kicking that addiction's butt down the stairs....

Hang on tight...  I promise it will get better... You are going to have some of these days for awhile.  Especially around milestones.   I have eaten my way thru the kitchen a few days....  I am over 100 days now and it seems to be settling down, but I know there are more in store.  IT does get easier to ignore, distract.. etc.

What keeps me from ONE PUFF   I DO NOT Want to repeat those first 30 to 40 days every again......

There is NO such thng as one puff.. I know one will lead me right back to a pack a day.... I have rewarded myself.. I have put the $$  away.  I have been saving for a new lap top..... Well I got it.. (husband put in what I was short..)

and all those $$$$ would have gone up in smoke and I would still be looking at lap tops.

Remember you are treating yourself well.... Now don't forget to Reward yourself.

you can do this... and remember do it ONE day at a time..

Bonnie

I can only share the things that helped me.

First off were starburst chews. OMG I lived on those things!  I really liked them though because they have a very strong flavor that totally took over my senses for a short while.

Plus they lasted just about as long as the serious cravings lasted - usually a few minutes.

You have no idea. I just about ate my weight in those little buggers!

The other thing that really helped me was the list called "Junkie Thinking"  I know it gets bumped up here now and then so you may well have already seen it.

I can only tell you that this was such a critical part of my quit that I share it with everyone. Really reading this and totally seeing myself in it was a big eye-opener and gave me something concrete to accept and deal with. This list is taken from http://sg.stopsmokingcenter.net/support/viewmessages.aspx?topic=27331&forum=5&forumname=Coping+with+Cravings&topictitle=Junkie+Thinking

I actually printed this out and taped it hanging from my overhead cabinet door on my desk so that it hung directly in my face when I turned to the side.  That way I couldn't help but see it and think about it all day every day at work. I've also re-arranged these from the original thread in order of what they meant to me. Your mileage may vary!

I mean, who here hasn't said at least half of these to themselves over and over again?! :)

Junkie Thinking

JUNKIE THINKING: "One Puff won't hurt"
RESPONSE: "One puff will always hurt me, and it always will because I'm not a social smoker. One puff and I'll be smoking compulsively again."

JUNKIE THINKING: "I really need to smoke now, I'm so upset."
RESPONSE: "Smoking is not going to fix anything. I'll still be upset, I'll just be an upset smoker. I never have to have a cigarette. Smoking is not a need; it's a want. Once the crisis is over, I'll be relieved and grateful I'm still not smoking."

JUNKIE THINKING: "I only want one."
RESPONSE: "I have never wanted only one. In fact, I want 20-30 a day every day. I want them all."

JUNKIE THINKING: "I'm doing so well, one won't hurt me now."
RESPONSE: "The only reason I'm doing so well is because I haven't taken the first one. Yet once I do, I won't be doing well anymore. I'll be smoking again."

JUNKIE THINKING: "If I slip, I'll keep trying."
RESPONSE: "If I think I can get away with one little "slip" now I'll think I can get away with another little "slip" later on."

JUNKIE THINKING: "I need one to get me through this withdrawal."
RESPONSE: "Smoking will not get me through the discomfort of not smoking. It will only get me back to smoking. One puff stops the process of withdrawal and I'll have to go through it all over again."

JUNKIE THINKING: "I'll just be a social smoker."
RESPONSE: "I'm a chronic, compulsive smoker, and once I smoke one I'll quickly be thinking about the next one. Social smokers can take it or leave it. That's not me."

JUNKIE THINKING: "I'll just stop again."
RESPONSE: "Sounds easy, but who am I trying to kid? Look how long it too me to stop this time. And once I start, how long will it take before I get sick enough to face withdrawal again? In fact, when I'm back in the grip of compulsion, what guarantee do I have that I'll ever be able to stop again?"

JUNKIE THINKING: "I miss smoking right now."
RESPONSE: "Of course I miss something I've been doing every day for most of my life. But do I miss the chest pain right now? Do I miss the worry, the embarrassment? I'd rather be an ex-smoker with an occasional desire to smoke, than a smoker with a constant desire to stop doing it."

JUNKIE THINKING: "I don't care."
RESPONSE: "What is it exactly that I think that I don't care about? Can I truthfully say I don't care about chest pain? I don't care about gagging in the morning? I don't care about lung cancer? No, I care about these things very much. That's why I stopped smoking in the first place."

JUNKIE THINKING: "What difference does it make, anyway?"
RESPONSE: "It makes a difference in the way I breathe, the way my heart beats, the way I feel about myself. It makes a tremendous difference in every aspect of my physical and emotional health."

Just remember it is only a crave and you know how to handle those, right?  Just don't smoke.  I can tell you from my past quits it is not worth that smoke.  Eat, who gives a rat's a$$ right now, if that keeps you from smoking then eat, drink water, walk, scream your head off, just don't smoke.  Tomorrow will be better.

Milestone craves are the worst. They come from no where and bang. As you get further along in your quit you will began to understand it better. For me now it is not a crave but more like a bad/sad day thing going. When it happened the last time I got back in here to see where I was and sure enough, it was 300 days for me. The addiction remembers even when we don't. Don't let it fool you. Power though now and enjoy life smoke free.

Hey Beckylynn!!!

That ol' nico-demon reared it's ugly head at about 30 days for me, too!!!    DISTRACTIONS, girl!!!   Find something to do, anything!!!  I'm on IM everyday during the week if you run into coping problems!

One other thing to think about...  You don't want to go through those first 30 days again, do you???   Tell that ol' demon to be gone and to quit bothering you!!!

Beckylynn,

Congratulations on your 30 days! That is a fantastic accomplishment and something to be very proud of. Use the coping skills you learned at the beginning of your quit. Take another walk and try to walk a little faster if you need to. Drink more water or enjoy a warm tea. Try taking a little nap. Stay focused on the positive; think and share with us the benefits of your quit this far. How has your life changed for the positive or negative since you quit smoking? What kind of rewards have you planned for your 1 month celebrations?
