Sometimes there's a thought, a destructive thought, that what happens if the cravings never go away? How will I be able to live smoke free if I have to carry around this millstone all my life? The odds are with you. Most of the time the cravings will go away and never hurt you again. Fact is, sometimes they don't. A friend of mine confided that he has them 24/7 after 2 1/2 years of not smoking. A woman I met at an art show said that she has them 24/7 after 8 years. They told me this because I still have them. Constant cravings. Even sleep is no relief because I dream that I'm smoking. If you are one of those who defy the odds, it doesn't mean you are condemned to smoke. My friend was smoke free after 2 1/2 years, that woman was smoke free after 8 years. I am still smoke free. It still can happen. Human beings are adaptable. The cravings become background noise. They are manageable. I'll bet you are in the majority. The cravings will become less and less, further and further apart until they stop. It's good to know, though, that even if they don't, you still don't have to smoke. Someone told me (I think it was Mr Ed) that when we smoked we thought about smoking 24/7. And when we quit, maybe the first month it goes down to thinking of smoking 22/7, then 2 months and maybe we go down to 20/7, and so on. So by 6 months, you are still thinking a lot of smokes (we did it all the time, remember) but a lot less than 24/7 and sometimes not for many hours at a time. So celebrate the times you are not thinking of it, and say H*ll NO the other times the thought comes into your mind, and together we will get 'er done. Jacqui, this addiction doesn't die easily. I'm over a year and I still have cravings. Oh well... Everyone puts up with some unpleasantness in life... bill collectors, arguments with spouses/mates, conflicts with children, employers, coworkers... etc. We struggle to learn our lessons in school, we overcome emotional pain in the process of growing up... The way I look at it, this is just one more thing that I have to sometimes deal with in order to get where I want to be. Are the benefits worth it? Yes, for me they are. When I'm in the thick of the struggle it may not seem as though they are... but they are. I know that. When I was where you are, I felt like I was in the doldrums. It didn't really feel like anything was happening. I wasn't smoking, but I didn't really feel like I was making forward progress either. But that takes time. And it's different for everyone. For me though, it probably took 8 months before I really started to see the hands on the clock move. Now, it's quite pronounced. I can really see my progress these days. And you will too. Hang in there! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/6/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 384 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 9,600 Amount Saved: $3,552.00 Life Gained: Days: 62 Hrs: 16 Mins: 50 Seconds: 27

Jacqui My heart goes out to you only because I know the obsession so well. Have you asked yourself why after moving through 112 days that the need should reach such a fever point at this moment? I do hope that you are not feeling alone, because believe it or not there are many people here who do not want you to smoke. We all understand how it can be sometimes. We also understand that if you hold tight now and if you resolve to let this trouble go right now, the days will become easier to bear. One reason that I will never go back to smoking is that I never wish to doubt my ability to live a smoke free life again. You can do this, please consider all you have accomplished to date and use that experience to keep you smoke free now. nonic My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 422 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 12,660 Amount Saved: $4,431.00 Life Gained: Days: 78 Hrs: 18 Mins: 25 Seconds: 13

Hi Jacqui, Jan summed it up very well. There are several of us on this site who have given in and had to restart, not fun. Just hang on and will be so happy that you did. That monster likes to appear every now and then just to test the water. You see he wants you back and he will do everything possible. Just tell the chatter to shut up and tell the monster to take a hike.
