For Our New Quitters

Thank you mercy, I found your post to be very helpful. And the last tidbit "quitting is easier than dying" hit me right in the face. I think as smokers we tend to think about that a lot, because if you continue to smoke that is the only thing that will come out of it. I am going to remember that saying tomorrow and probably several days after that when I have those weak moments. Hi, I quit on 12/31/07 and yes I'm glad to be here, and to have some place, to unload how I'm feeling, this is my 3rd or 4th try, I never joined any on line group B4 now and I think will really help me by having an outlet, sometimes family just don't get it. I can identify with smoking in response to everything too. It's day four for me now. It's finally starting to get easier for me. Before yesterday it was like just one big massive craving that wouldn't end. Now it's a series of smaller cravings that I fight through one at a time. This site really helps me a lot. Seeing that others are going through this too makes it feel a lot more realistic that I can quit. And the work sheets help too. Especially being able to look at the daily progress sheets to track how I am doing. Hi Dave and Welcome. I read you loud and clear. " I would smoke as a response to everything". Me too. And I am surprised to find myself here as well. I've never been much of a joiner and was always taught to work out my problems on my own. It still feels strange to share this experience with others but I truly believe it is a part of the reason I have made it this far. I am still pretty new at this, but I can say that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. You will get there, too. And you are right, this is a great group of people. If the emotional turmoil gets to be too much at times, come here and ask for some help. Just knowing that others are going through the same things can make it easier to handle. So welcome, sit back, dig in your heels, and Congratulations!!! Thanks for the support Danielle and Rusty. In answer to whether there is anything in particular I am struggling with, I would say the most difficult bit is while I am awake! I have heard people talk about particularly difficult bits but I find it all pretty tough. Having smoked for 30 years, most of it fairly heavily - 30 a day or so - I would smoke as a response to everything; being happy, depressed, bored, excited, on holiday, at work, at home, with a drink, after a meal, before a meal, during a meal if possible! So everything that goes on in life is a cigarette trigger for me. Still, nearly a week now. I am having the occasional bit of NRT (gum) although I am not sure it is doing much to help; but I'll give it a go. I think more important than NRT is focusing on the benefits to be had from kicking the habit. Kids are already really pleased, I have noticed an improved sense of smell and taste - tea is fantastic! (I am English after all.) And for me the biggest benefit is not having to go through the embarassment of saying to non-smoking friends "I'm just going out for a smoke", and then come back a few minutes later knowing I stink. First experience of that benefit was at a New Year's Eve party. That's why I gave up a day 'early' and it was so much more enjoyable not to have that embarrassment to go through. This community/forum/support idea is not what I would have expected to go for; not my natural sort of thing; but actually I find it very helpful to share the experience with others who understand. So thanks for the support and good luck everyone. Hi Dave, look at you at six days! That is awesome and deserving of a reward for sure. I really believe in rewarding yourself at whatever milestone is important for you -- an hour, a day, 3 and a half days, or a week! Yes, things will get better and better, the good days will begin to outnumber the rough ones. You are doing great. Keep it up! Just found this site. Was looking in desperation for a bit of moral support! Anyway, I've found it - what a great group of people. Just broken the six day barrier. Hard going isn't it? Still, I think the next six days will be easier than the last six. Well done all of us.
