One of our guys, Fred, has been fighting esophagus cancer for 2 years.
He was diagnosed shortly before we buried Norm, Norm had lung cancer, surgery, smoked through his treatment - as did I. We buried Norm Dec 2005. I left his wake, went to my car and smoked all the way home.
Fred was at Norm's wake also, bearing radiation scars on his throat, weighing about 98 pounds.
After the radiation he did chemo, all this year.
Last Christmas he was cancer free.
This spring it was back. More chemo.
A month ago he was cancer free.
Last week it came back.
Dr says this is it.
Fred was really excited when I quit smoking. Said he put them down when they diagnosed him with esophagus cancer. He wished he had never smoked. He has a daughter, she just started first grade.
We, the company I work for, are going to help make Fred's next few weeks as comfortable as possible, he doesn't have long term disability so his family is/has been suffering outside of what we could do to help.
I am going to miss him so much :(
