of course the end of this road leads to hiring based on DNA. I heard about a business in Michigan that gave employees 6 months to quit or be fired and did just that and got away with it. Thankfully its still illegal to discriminate like this is Canada as we can refuse a test, but i'm sure the writing is on the wall... Hello to all, Such a downstream approach! Very sad indeed. Although Brenna is correct, employers are seeking to get their employees smoke free to cut costs and increase productivity, offering an incentive as opposed to a penalty may be a better approach. Assuring the ressources are available to aid the employee is also equally important as some conditions like blood glucose and cholesterol are inherited and cannot be controlled regardless of changes made to lifestyle. The cost of health care in the US is nearly unreachable! It's not just being able to afford the smokes anymore. Many of our businesses can't remain competitive because of this expense. Many of our citizens don't receive adequate health care because of this expense. This must be a knee-jerk reaction by a few desperate businesses that our honorable and balanced media have chosen to highlight fully in perspective. Our energies would be best focused on helping people quit in the short term and helping them stay quit in the long term. That other monster will take care of itself. His post referred directly to that article and wasn't meant to encompass all reasons why employers do these things, but certainly in my opinion doesn't mean that more research is required on his part in order to quote bit from an article. Regardless, his point and that article are clear - 1984 is not so far in the past. Employers who bill employees who they deem to be unhealthy just want a hand in their employees pockets. That's all it is. It's the modern day version of the company store. They give and then start taking back. What happens when the fines start exceeding a low level employees wages? Your cholesterol is too high. You had a cigarette, a glass of wine at lunch or last night's dinner, you sprained an ankle roller skating, the list of unhealthy is very very long. Do you wear perfume, deodorant, hair spray? Do you have a pet? That cat hair clinging to your sweater might very well be a health hazard, to you or someone else. It's ridiculous. How stupid. This kind of negative campain mght help some people with their quit- or make never-smokers think their hepling me- but it does the contrary: make me want to rebel and smoke 5no, I won't start again- but maybe I could make a fake picture of me smoking on photoshop just to spite these employers.. I'd prefer a smoker with a great attitude to a cranky, witless non-smoker. Einstein, JFK, Sartre, Derrida, Jung, Orson Wells, Tolkien, C.S. John_in_NC, Sounds like you have a bit more research to do as to why companies are doing this. Research has shown that the some lifestyle habits can decrease an individuals productivity in the work place. It sounds to me like employers are trying to screen their workers to increase productivity. All the better that everyone here is quitting or quit and doesn't have to worrry about that anymore. If I were an alcoholic or a crack addict, my employer would pay for an expensive rehab facility & I would get 75% of my salary while I was there. I could go there 3 times before there would ever be any talk of firing me because of an addiction affecting my work. Smoking? They make the SSC a website that we're allowed to access during work hours. We don't get tested for nicotine, but it's made plain that a smoker is considered a less valuable, less productive employee than a non-smoker. Until niocotine is illegal and there are employer or government paid programs to help people beat the addiction, it is completely unfair to test for it & certainly unfair to discriminate against its users.
