Is it true that you have to "want to give up"?

16 years ago 0 983 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
The wake up call is a good thing for those of us that answer and say enough is enough. We are tired of destroying ourselves with an addiction. Smoking related diseases are not confined to a certain age group, you can be 28 to 88. There is no time like the present to listen to our wake up calls. Mine was my father's massive stroke that has left him with significant damage to the left side of his brain, he will never be the same. I don't want that for myself or for the people I love. I'm trying to get my mom to quit smoking right now...her excuse for not quitting, now isn't a good time, she is too stressed taking care of my dad. Freebird. I know exactly were you are coming from. I am 28 years old (young) and here's my story. I started smoking when I was 12. I have had asthma since I was 7 and have been in the hospital I don't know how many times for asthma attacks. My grandmother (mom's mom) had severe asthma and I watched her smoke herself into a heart attack and die. Recently I have lost 6 family members in 7 months. I didn't think that psychologically I could quit smoking it was my coping tool. And then one day my grandmother (dad's mom) was hospitalized with COPD and emphazema. I was with here everyday for two weeks watching as everyday life slipped away from her. One of the last things that Grandma said to me was "Promise me that you will never let yourself get this way". Everyone in my family smokes; mom, dad, step dad, brother, in laws, aunts and uncles, friends. And the more I look at them the less I have the urge to smoke. My father also has congestive heart failure (smokes almost 2 packs a day) and he has lost numerous brothers and his father from heart disease caused by smoking. So my advise to you is if you can always see the health positives from not smoking you (and I) will always stay quit. P.S. Since I have quit my lung function has gone from 57% to normal function. Keep that in mind also. Keep up the good work! freebird like any addiction, whether it be drugs drink, or nicotine, you h ave to be ready to quit. I mean that your desire to quit has to be stronger than your desire to smoke, having said that, everybody's quit is unique, and whatever works for you is fine, just don't smoke! lynnexx My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/24/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 364 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 5,460 Amount Saved: 1,456.00 Life Gained: Days: 41 Hrs: 8 Mins: 46 Seconds: 55

Yes, I think its true that you have to want to do it. But than can take all sorts of different forms and be informed by different experiences. I hadn't really started wheezing (the dog had) but I just grew to see smoking as a thing I simply didn't want to do any more. I missed it like an old friend had died but have been determined that this was it. The end of a 40 year (+) friendship. It's worth it! Penguin, I didn't want to quit smoking; I loved it. I thought it was my friend. But then, this friend, took away my health, my money, my friends, stole $ from me from being so expensive to buy, made me go out in the middle of night to go buy it, controlled me, made me stand outside in the cold and rain because my real friends didn't like it. All I wanted was to be like everybody else and feel accepted, instead I was rejected, my real friends didn't want to hug me as much because I smelled like it, and I felt like an outcast. NOW, I am free, richer, smell awesome, and give out free hugs which everybody really enjoy. What more could I possibly ask for? Oh, and I got my health back too, that radiant glow is so beautiful. So I wonder what I was thinking? I thought I had a friend, but all the time I had an enemy. If I would ever change that? No way baby. Things always seem harder to do when you "have" to than when you "want" to.
