Hi Guys, Glad you liked the rough guide. It took me 2.5hrs to write and rewrite. If it helps someone then that can only be good. Stuck at work still but on the bright side, I have only one week left of being the only one around. May have another essential oil bath as the helps me sleep. This time however, I shall not put the whole bottle in (i'm a bloke, I thought 1 bottle = 1 session :) ). I have since been informed that you're only supposed to use a tiny bit. This week I have decided on a proper reward. It should arrive by Thursday hopefully. I've ordered a Polar F11 heart rate monitor/watch for when I go running. This is my attempt to replace a bad habit with a good one. If it arrives earlier, then I have asked for it to not be given to me until that day for obvious reasons. Kev, I am speechless! Thank you so much for the diary of your journey. I hope you print it and keep it handy so you can see just how far you have come. Kev Made me cry...and girls get to cry too...even tough ones like me ;) What you've said here shows how far you have come on this journey. Yes! After those first few days or weeks you do recover your old self. At least most people do. I'm glad you have. You've given such valuable advice here...one day, one hour, one minute at a time. Stay in the present. Post before you smoke. And rewards..yes, rewards. (I'm going to bump up Free and Low Cost Rewards...again...lol) You are a testament to it can be done if you just keep trying. aloha nui loa -aloha My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 128 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 5,120 Amount Saved: $870.40 Life Gained: Days: 17 Hrs: 21 Mins: 57 Seconds: 27

JDK ROUGH GUIDE TO THOSE WANTING TO QUIT COLD TURKEY ==================================================== 1) Find someone close to you who is planning to quit or who has just started. Someone who you respect will make a good quit buddy. You will be supporting each other through the hard times. 2) So you picked a start date of tomorrow but have 100 smokes left? Two options here, you can either smoke them all or you can cut them up using a pair of scissors. If you chose the latter method, you may want to put the bits in a sealable jar with water. When you feel the urge to smoke just unseal the jar and smell what you will smell like if you smoke. 3) You're first day quitting. Avoid shops like the plague, plan your route if need be (I did). 1 hour has gone past and you're suffering a bit. Right here's the important bit. Breathe in fully and slowly until you cannot breathe in any more. Hold that breath for 2 seconds then breathe out. Do this 12 times. Do you feel slightly better? Yes? good! Now you have to do this every hour on the hour until you sleep. Do this for three days or more if needed. 4) You're some point through what is known as hell week. You cannot sleep, concentrate, or in fact do anything. Don't worry, this is normal for a lot of quitters. You're a man and crying constantly. Don't worry, this is the era of the new man, and anyway, girls like to see a sensitive side to us once in a while. For those that are really bad shape (like me at this point), you want to end your life, you don't think you can make it as a non-smoker and you've gone too far to smoke again, you're planning an overdose or getting that noose prepared. Start writing lots and lots to the forums for starters, you get really good advice. When you're writing you're concentrating on writing and not craving. Book an emergency appointment with a health professional. Nothing is worth ending anything for. The comforting news is that someone has been in your position before and will give advice. The really good news is that this too passes. It is a part of healing 6) Now you're on the road. Its a really bumpy road, but it is still a road. Here you can learn a secret. Make a pledge to someone every day that you will not smoke. Make it to someone you care about, they're likely to ask how it is going. The best trick of all though is this. Do not think of the past or the future, only the day at hand. You're going to play the whole quit one day at a time. Every minute and every hour you spend during that day not smoking is a major success and deserves to be rewarded. 7) Reward yourself often, anything and everything. It can be free. 8) Get someone to tell you often that it does get amazingly better. This is oh so important. 9) Think of it as your confidence growing a tiny bit more each day. 10) NEVER BE AFRAID TO POST! An essential one I feel. So many (including me) have blown their quits by just not posting. I started off really embarrassed about posting but that was because I was embarrassed about asking for help and what replies I would get. Very few people will tell you to go top yourself or that they have given up on you. Mostly you will get great advice. It is all about building confidence, and before you know it, you will be doing the same to new newbies. BEST WISHES AND GOOD LUCK! Hi Nance, You're sooo nice! I think maybe you have more confidence in me than I do of myself still, but it does grow slightly each week maybe. That doesn't mean that I can't write some very useful hints and tips for newbies...I'd love to do that and will on my next post. The positive kev is the real kev. The one everyone around me knows. It's a weird thing but people would come up and ask me why I was smiling (like you need a reason). I think week 1 and 2 came a shock to a lot of people because I went from constantly smiling and happy to constantly down and withdrawn. Towards the end of week 2, flashes of the old kev returned, not that often, but they are there. I think you have picked up on it. I can't really tell to much because I live only to complete the day and get that carrot in the shape of a reward if I remember. The biggest benefit of quitting smoking so far for me is meeting you lot. It certainly healthily goes a long way to solving the 'L' of H.A.L.T. The 'H' isn't a problem and I am still working on 'A' and 'T'. I guess as I a working right through that a bath will be my reward again. I wonder if there is a reward list for time-limited techies out there :) Nance, I will come and do the cleaning next weekend ok? :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/12/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 16 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 400 Amount Saved: 67.20 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 1 Mins: 27 Seconds: 46

Kev, Congratulations! You have truly "turned the corner" and are now "in it to win it". How about giving some of the newbies who may be watching your progress some of your tips, and what are some of the benefits of quitting you have noticed so far? Sorry you have to work, but when the whistle blows, you are outta there. Have any rewards planned for this weekend? Thanks for the promise!
