Smoking is a habit that is challenging to kick; we are all aware of this fact. It is a day by day adventure, the farther you go the easier it gets. Often we need to reflect and remember just how difficult it is to quit and the WHY, the why am I doing this for anyway! It is helpful to realize before we light up, that one is never enough and besides they are just are going to make you feel sick, dizzy and bad anyhow. Smoking is really not what it is cracked up to me. If I had a choice and I do have a choice, I rather not smoke, thank you very much for asking. What I think it is Penitent and what Rusty has said, some let their guard down and end up getting sucked back into the trap. The lion's share of quitters over a year remain quit. And I would add that a person rarely, if at, all thinks about smoking when they know they have it solidly licked. I can not tell you how many times that I told myself this lie...and, of course, starting smoking again. I would even try and convince myself that I could have my smoking under control. I would have two in an evening..Oh it will be okay if I just smoke in the evenings...if I just smoke 5 a day, that won't be too harmful; it will be just like my body handling air pollution. But, then I had to have one in the mornings with my coffee. After two years on this see saw of cravings, I finally realize that i can not have ONE puff. It will just keep me craving and craving and craving. My nicotine lozenges and gum keep me craving..but not like cigarettes. I do not quit have the confidence to give up the nrt yet, but I know that I will and then go from there to COMPLETE freedom. I am getting kind of impatient with myself and this whole nrt dependency, but, I will deal with it when the time comes. On another site, they say that if you decide to put a cigarette into your mouth, you may as well put the whole pack in your mouth and light it, because there is no such thing as smoking one. All of us who have tried to quit have experienced these junkie lies: I'm far enough along now. I can handle just one. Just one will make me feel better. Just one will make me happy again. If you think you want to smoke just one, ask yourself if you are willing to go back to your former level of consumption, because that is what will happen. So you are right, let your mind and body heal. Put the smoking memories to rest.
