Easy or hard?

Not sure where I found this but figured this would be an appropriate place to redistribute it: Quitting Smoking is Easy!! Easier than hearing your doctor say, "I'm sorry . . ." Easier than breathing through tubes up your nose. Easier than having a Tracheotomy. Easier than your child seeing you die from cancer. Easier than losing a friend . . . or a friend losing you. Easier than laying in the hospital having radiation treatment. Easier than laying in the hospital wishing you could feel the sun. Easier than listening to your loved ones crying outside your hospital room. Easier than preparing for your funeral because the cancer has gone so far. Easier than picking out your favorite songs for your funeral. Easier than trying to say the right words because they will be your last. Easier than not seeing your child's face because of blindness. Easier than looking out the window knowing you can't go there anymore. Easier than changing your retirement plans. Easier than imagining your spouse being alone. Easier than going through your photo album with tears. Easier than telling your child you are dying young because you smoked. Easier than realizing smoking was more important to you than your life. This quit was quite easy compared to others. Why? Because I came into this quit with a different, positive attitude, and the realization that I was addicted to Nicotine. If you want to quit you have to treat yourself as an addict. Nicotine is a drug that addicts quickly and completely, knowing that and realizing that are key to quitting. How can I help Newbies? Come into this quit, close the door behind you and never look back. There are things in our lives that we automatically do, because we feel we 'need' to or 'have' to do them, make quitting one of those things, no matter however you go about it in your own life. Do it for your life, do it positively. I chose "Smoking is not an option, so I will have to do something else. NOPE!" as my self talk mantra. It really helped. If you can get your head in this place where you believe you are an addict and have to do this for your life, you will succeed. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 95 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,375 Amount Saved: $1,002.25 Life Gained: Days: 11 Hrs: 15 Mins: 31 Seconds: 9

You can't make an alcoholic put down that drink, or a heroin junkie put down that needle. Those who "lurk" at this site take what they need from all of the postings and discard the rest. It may motivate someone who is on the fence, and that could be just enough. It may further motivate some to join us, and that's better for everyone. Once they are here we can do what we do so well to support them in their struggle. But we can't make anyone want to quit more than they want to smoke. They have to want it for themselves. We all know someone who admittedly didn't want to quit when he first started with us and has publicly struggled, yet he has remained quit. Maybe he will have some sage advice. My quit was easier - relatively few stumbles, and no cuts or bruises. Why is that? Well, I believe if you wish to quit this substance you need to educate yourself on addiction, and realize you were once a non smoker. If you remember (and for some, it has been quite some time) you know you did not NEED to smoke - but NOW you do. Then, you have to draw the line and realize you will have some discomfort. This discomfort is not painful when you understand that your body is HEALING...and you are on your way to a better and healthier YOU. If you feel you are uncomfortable, your body does not want it - YOU want it - and sometimes we can rationalize any behavior no matter how bad. Some of you say it was easy, and that's great, but give no help as to how to make it easier for those who are struggling. If you say that it's easy if you want it more than you want to smoke, what if somebody really doesn't want to quit, but is still trying... what can we do to help them build that desire? Crave the Quit! A few years ago I quit for 4 months, or so, and that was an easy quit... until I went back smoking. I mean, it was so easy that I was shocked by it. This time 'round? Not so easy, in spite of the fact that I didn't really do anything differently. Though I think that one thing that's played into it is that, a few years ago... my physical health seemed to bounce back very quickly, and this time it hasn't. I'm having more residual problems with breathing, etc. And that may be hindering me from being as positive as I'd like to be. But, regardless... my attitude going into this was, "No matter what....". So it doesn't matter whether it's tough or easy, I'm smoke-free and nothing is going to change that. Cigarettes Not Smoked

16 years ago 0 1056 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I quit once before - with hypnosis - and stayed off long enough to get pregnant and have 2 children - but then I too belived I could be a social smoker. This quit for me - cold turkey - has been possible because I feel in a better mental place. I had to stop drinking 3 years ago and I use the same stategy as I have with drink. Just remind myself of how it doesn't solve any problem to drink (or light up) and, in fact, I would feel pretty crap after. I wouldn't say it's been easy and, having said the above about mental attitude, I am NOT the most joyous and up-beat person around so that in itself has been another challenge! The thing for me has ABSOLUTELY been this site. It took me a while to know how to work it and I don't do a lot of the partying thing but I have told everyone about it who asks about stopping smoking because it has definately been a huge factor in my success. I know it's early days for me to be spouting off so but that's how I feel today.
