Lies we told ourselves as smokers

My big lie was "I can stop whenever i want too!" Yeah rite thats why I have had 3 failed quits! ~Valic My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/24/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 7 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 35 Amount Saved: $37.10 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 13 Mins: 23 Seconds: 3

Oh yeah! That was a big one for me too, I used that as an excuse for so long. I would think I wanted to quit and then tell myself that there was no point because I would just blow it the next time I had a beer anyway! Another one of my biggest ones was "I can't drink without smoking." That one kept me a smoker for a long time because I didn't want to give up drinking totally AND quit smoking at the same time! That would be too much! Well, I now know that I CAN drink and not even crave... but it did take me a long time to get there. Crave the Quit! I'm another one who only bought single packs. I always felt buying a carton would mean I was "committing to smoking"! Like running to buy a pack as soon as (or before) I ran out was just chance! :8o: My ultimate lie to myself : "I'm not addicted. I smoke in secret, while alone and nobody else knows ... therefore it doesn't count" My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/29/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 62 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 744 Amount Saved: $252.96 Life Gained: Days: 5 Hrs: 18 Mins: 52 Seconds: 25

(((raising hand))) I also never bought cartons, only 1-2 packs at a time. Not because I was going to quit, but because that way I didn't have to count (or to know) how many packs I actually smoked. I convinced myself I smoked less buying single packs. HA! And single packs are cheaper. Yeah, right. "I like smoking, and I don't want to quit" But I was not addicted! I told myself that: -I liked it -I needed to relax -I needed it to hold an in-depth conversation -I needed it when I was uncomfortable -I needed it to be allowed to take a break at work -I was more addicted than most people, so why bother? It is all pretty stupid when you look at it like that, isn't it? Compared to why to quit: -3 family members with various cancers -starting a teaching job in the fall -I want to be able to jog on the beach without the cool breathing issues I don't know. They seem so much more substantial, since I can do all of the above things like relax and take breaks and be more comfortable without cigarettes, and the bottom 3, which are vastly more important to me, are far more difficult to do while I smoke. They really do nothing but hurt. So why do we lie to ourselves like that? I convinced myself the addcition was more powerful than I was. After all...didn't they say it is more addicting than heroin? That is why my past attempts failed. Subconsciencely I was trying to do the impossible. I confronted the lie. I told myself all of those, especially the relaxing thing. I though cigarettes calmed me down. NOT! Yes all junkie talk, all of it was! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 85 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,125 Amount Saved: $896.75 Life Gained: Days: 10 Hrs: 10 Mins: 34 Seconds: 0

There are endless lies aren't there? I did not want to quit; I enjoyed smoking. I would get too depressed. There would be no reason to get up in the mornings and no enjoyable way to start my day. I could not enjoy coffee without my nicotine. This is an enlightening thread. Let's expose allll the lies!
