What have you learned from previous attempts to quit?

17 years ago 0 1543 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
The biggest thing I learned is that if you have a NEGATIVE attitude about quiting your not gonna make it. Though craves are hard to get through....a negative attitude is like a brick wall. In a weird way... you have to be excited about quiting...happy your quiting. You have to be eager to see what is around the next corner of the quit. You MUST forget what is behind... and look forward. I learned that it helps tremendously to use a support group, like the one I have found at this wonderful place. Without it, in past quits I was ripping that patch off every other day. I didn't have that "wait, stop, talk" place that may have kept me going. I learned to take one day at a time (and now I do this when ever there is a bad day - just get through today...tomorrow is another day) Windy My Milage: My Quit Date: 9/11/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 193 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,878 Amount Saved: $965 Life Gained: Days: 18 Hrs: 21 Mins: 15 Seconds: 16

I've learnt.. Stop making stupid excuses to justify smoking again cos i'm still the same person i was before & when i smoked, never let my guard down, relax & the most important of all... i don't want to smoke anymore ! Interesting perspective Pen! That really made me think! Thank you. In past attempts, it wasn't hard for me to quit... it was just hard for me to STAY quit. I could go a few days without a smoke, or even a few weeks, and really not be too bad off. It was when I had to start living my life again (i.e. being around smoking friends, having life crap on me, etc...) that I started having problems. Plus, until this quit, I ALWAYS thought that after a certain point of not smoking, I could smoke "once in a while" and still be a non-smoker. It wasn't until THIS quit that I learned that it's just not possible. From this quit, I learned that rewards are very important. I leanred that the maintenance of the quit is even more important than the initial few days and that I needed to not just focus on the first 3 days, but focus on how I would handle life's situations when they came up. I learned that just because the nicotine is out of your system in 3 days, that doesn't mean that the cravings are done in 3 days. I learned that there are lots of people just like me who really do want to help me quit as well and that I'm not alone. Even if my "best friend" is gone, I have friends here who really do care about me and want to see me succeed. That really has been the difference this time around. Crave the Quit! This is a great post. I have learned that I am in control. I am an adult and I can choose how to live my life. I also know better than to put any more poison into my body. I learned that it wasn't a matter of will power but choice. My first try I just fought and said "no" to myself every time I had a craving -it was completely exhausting. This time I knew that the cravings would come and that eventually it would end. I also made myself picture what would really happen if I had the proverbial "just one"; I'd be right back to a pack a day in no time. Great topic LG!
