Hey JDK, Welcome and congratulations on making such an important and wonderful decision in your life. You've been so wise to read a lot of material on this site and work towards preparing yourself for your Quit. You really can do this!! It's normal to feel anxious about quitting. Most people do but honestly, you're not depriving yourself of a single thing. Remind yourself that this is YOUR life, YOUR quit, and YOUR choice. Keep yourself in charge. Stay close to this site, post a lot, and read a lot. Okay? Vent if you need to and ask as many questions as you need to ask. I type this all of the time but it's so, so important to drink lots and lots of water. It helps with those cravings, withdrawal symptoms, and flushes your system. I don't know why it helps with the cravings but it does. Avoid those "triggers" that make you want to smoke if you can. If you can't avoid them, change them up. Example: A huge trigger for me is my computer. I had to rearrange it, clean it, put a candy jar and candle where the ashtray once sat, and I sat pictures of my family out. Things like that. Have lots of things like Hard Candy, Gum, Sunflower Seeds, Straws, Toothpicks, etc. for that "Hand to Mouth" thing. The workbook over to the left, under Quit Program Tools, will really help you a lot along with reading posts and posting yourself. We're here to help you. You are strong enough to do this. Oh, I went cold turkey after 27 years and 2 1/2 packs a day. I stuck close the site, worked that workbook, and read a lot of posts. I posted myself and followed the advice of other folks who had successfully quit. So, you can do this. Well, its getting closer and I thought I would post for the first time on this great forum (I have been reading for quite a while). I have been attempting to quit for on and off about 2 years. I've tried various different methods including : Hypnotherapy, patches, gum, audio tapes, books (lots of them), and of course cold turkey straight from 20 smokes a day (40 if I go to the pub). However, this is the first time I have used this site and printed off all the reading materials. It's probably also the first time I have actually truthfully thought about why I smoke (boredom in the pub and getting away from the computer at work). I've decided to pick the day when I am not on call and also during the easter holiday so not at work for 4 days to give me a better chance compared to the others. I am a bit more inspired and confident to do it this time round too, as my local barmaid has now given up smoking for 8 weeks! Plus the smoking ban coming up on 1st July (in England) is an added incentive. Mutters to himself...positive thinking..positive thinking. Kind Regards Kevin (aka JDK) My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/6/2007 Smoke-Free Days: -3 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 0 Amount Saved: 0 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 0 Mins: 0 Seconds: 0

Hi Gen, I had to reboot the PC in the end and that solved it. When you sign on you should have some offline PM's. I saw you online and started chatting but then I realised it could have been a ghost image. Kev yep 13:40 here UK also :) and GODZILLA is nowhere to be seen. I am sure I will get to use my ammo soon. Maybe he's scared that i have come prepared! 1224h - I can hear the dull thud of GODZILLA but it is not bothering me yet. p.s. ok, which one of you nicked the SSC IM launch button? I have a feeling the webmasters may be playing around. In the words of Dire Straits song 'I want my SSC' :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/12/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 0 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 0 Amount Saved: 0 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 0 Mins: 0 Seconds: 0

Right this is quit day 1 proper for me. Things I have done this morning : Notified my work buddies that I will not be smoking and therefore not to lend me any more cigarettes. Also cleared out my locker of any lighters (which they were happy to receive). Notified my family that I have quit and intend to stay that way. Apologised in advance if I don't seem my super cheerful self. And reminded them that this is only temporary. Stuck a big sign on my front door saying 'ladycigvictor is watching you - do not go to the shops and buy smokes.' Stuck a big sign on my garage door saying 'This is now a smoke free zone. Go for a run or watch some DVD's instead' Stocked up on water and put them in the fridge - mmm chilled water Notified my virtual local pub that I will not be down for a while and not to text me for pound coins. Dealing with triggers (helpful advice from my friends here): Mornings - rearrange schedule. Pub - don't go Boredom - DVD's, SSC IM and forum, running, wordsearches, chess, chillout music ..... I'm nicking ladycigvictor's GODZILLA idea. I think its a real go-er. Lets kick some ash. Gen, thanks for the tip re : cordial not juice. The reason I asked is because fruit juices are recommended to replace the natural sugar levels during quitting. Mike, 13+ hours rocks. Keep at it. Yes, I heard a lot about chantix and it is very successful. Unfortunately, I can't swallow tablets so it's out of the options for me. It takes away the desire to smoke apparently. Best wishes for today (I know you're several hours behind me).
