If you were to return to smoking...?

17 years ago 0 533 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
It makes me cry to sit and think about it...I've come so far...I hate to even think about it, but I guess that is what you wanted for us to do in the first place. I think the main thing is I would be disappointed in myself. I know that I have the strength to overcome this addiction but I would be allowing myself to be weak to it. I would be allowing the addiction to control my life. The images I see if i would continue to smoke: I see an old woman holding a cig and conected to an oxygen tank. How does this effect my attitude to remain smoke free?: I want to live a life to the fullest. How could I light up a cig knowing--truely knowing what I was doing to myself and possilbly to my family. I remember that I am not alone on this journey. I remember I need to take it one day at a time. Great job, everybody! There is so much commitment and determination in this thread. Pam, just as 15 years ago, I had no idea what I would be doing today...today I have no idea about 15 years from now. Set aside worries and anxieties about the future...unless you have a REALLY GOOD crystal ball, it's all going to be an adventure. Alohakeia, I don't think that any of us "old-timers" have forgotten any of those feelings. There are days that a teeny little thought pops into my head. Do I hassle myself over it? Do I hang onto it? NOPE. Sometimes I have a thought to hit my husband with a rubber chicken, but I don't worry about that thought either. I just let it go. LookingGlass, I wouldn't!!! The analogy that I draw would be to re-marry my ex-wife! To do this I would have to divorce my beautiful wife(Mrs Ed) and re-marry somebody who did me a lot more harm than good! We all make mistakes, but I dn't want to be foolish enough to repeat them! :8o: Mr Ed :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 457 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 13,716 Amount Saved: 3427.5 Life Gained: Days: 74 Hrs: 12 Mins: 18 Seconds: 50

I can't wait till time makes it all a dim memory I am totally committed to this quit. No matter how many times in a day the urge comes up, it is just not an option. That doesn't mean that it isn't hard at times, because it is. I can go for days without a strong urge..have even gone a few weeks, but then suddenly it pops up again. Then I just hang on. Sometimes it seems like some of you old-timers have forgotten those feelings. I don't romanticize smoking, and I don't dwell on it. But this is a very ingrained habit that is trggered by a lot of things still. As I don't smoke in response to those triggers, they lessen....but there is a lot of time that needs to pass, I think, until the urges to do not resurface. -aloha My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 55 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,205 Amount Saved: $374 Life Gained: Days: 7 Hrs: 14 Mins: 0 Seconds: 53

This is very true. I know that for me, I had to really protect my quit. It was simple BUT I knew deep down that protecting my quit at all costs was the key for me. I didn't take a fabulous trip to Malibu, CA - I stayed in my smaller circle, and kept the protection up, and today - no slips, and a strong, very strong quit going. Don't entertain the idea of smoking, why would anyone do that anyway. My friend used to say to me, "Don't borrow a jack" meaning there is no flat tire, don't look for trouble when it's not there, you may well find it. Blessings - Lookingglass, thanks for this thread... The smoking bug needs to be worked out of your system one way or another. Find YOUR way. My way is simple, smoking is not an option for me so there it is. It takee time and I like others who have responded here don't entertain the what if's. You need to keep yourself on a short leash at least until you get well. Some still have not quite yet, built their full quit confidence, but they will, I do believe. And the truth of the matter, do NOT think about smoking now, tomorrow or forever. Get over the what if's and let all those smoking thoughts drift out of your life forever. If you focus on other things it will take the thoughts away and as I have said here before, and I will repeat it, let mother time work its wonders. I've hesitated responding to this thread because I felt like I had made the decision to not ever return, so it was difficult to entertain the thought. But, after having persistent thoughts of smoking for two days, and reading through this thread, I realized that while it is as simple as "Just don't light up" (and I haven't), it is also a real and present danger, no matter how long one has smoke-free. So, I have been thinking about what it would be like if I returned to smoking, and I want to have it on record, for myself, if for nobody else:
I would be incredibly ashamed that I could not honor my word to myself, my family, and those who love me, that I was forever quit I would begin coughing again - all the time; when I laugh, when I lie down at night, when I bodyboard, when I walk...forget running I would not have much energy to do anything, so I would want to sleep all the time I would probably not live to know my grandchildren My children would be left without their only parent as they move through adulthood I would never have the chance to truly use my life to its fullest potential because I would be knowingly cutting it short I would be admitting that dieing is preferable to living, and making that decision despite any of my believed spiritual reasons not to
So, if that doesn't remind me what it would be like, please, someone else do so if you ever see me wavering...and I will gladly do the same for you N.O.P.E. -aloha My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/22/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 54 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,192 Amount Saved: $367.2 Life Gained: Days: 7 Hrs: 12 Mins: 56 Seconds: 42
