Question for those who've read the "book"

There's nothing wrong with cutting back, many do and are successful with the practice. Unfortunately, I was not one of them. I went into withdrawal early (prior to my quit date) and I was not prepared for that to happen. (it doesn't happen to everyone but it did happen to me) Also when cutting back, some of us will smoke whatever number of cigarettes we are still having with more intensity. On the other hand, some find it helps to taper off slowly. You'll have to decide what works best for you. Regardless of how many you smoke up until your quit date I would encourage you to really pay attention to the act of smoking. Don't drink anything, don't smoke while watching tv or doing anything else. Sit down and waste that time just smoking while concentrating on how bad it smells, the chemical taste, the nasty ashes, the smoke polluting the air. Think about how much you hate it and how much it costs to poison yourself. For whatever it is worth~The first time I read the book (which I do like very much) I smoked the entire time and did not get it. The next time I read it I had already joined the SSC and I UNDERSTOOD IT PERFECTLY! lol My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/20/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 511 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 11,259 Amount Saved: $2555 Life Gained: Days: 49 Hrs: 20 Mins: 27 Seconds: 28

Ladycigevictor. I read the book about 30 days after I quit. It is a useful tool in the quit process. It teaches us about the way we think about smoking and about the withdrawal process our brains go through. Very useful information. You will find the more you know about the quit process and smoking, the better armed you are against the addiction. Taking the plunge (actually quitting) is the hardest part. I set numerous quit dates and finally one worked. I usually didn't make it more than a few hours in previous attempts. The support I found here, and the fact that I was finally ready to give the quit my best shot were great factors in succeeding. Develop a plan that works for you. If one thing doesn't work, try something else. The point is you don't stop trying until you find what works for you. Congratulations on your decision to take your life back from the enslavement of smoking. The book has a lot of merit. Take what you need from it to be successful...doesn't mean everything...if it doesn't fit for you. An excellent book! As you read further in the book, he tells you why the "willpower" method and cutting down method is the hardest method of all. You will also notice that he says that your success at this will depend on doing exactly what he says! He knows what he's talking about. Keep reading the book. Read it slowly. Keep smoking while you read it. That's what he tells you to do. If you read it properly, I think you will feel differently about smoking by the time you get to the end. If you don't get to the end....well.....start reading it from the beginning again. Eventually, you will see the truth. Just my advice. Take what you want and leave the rest.
