Becky, Welcome to the SSC! Yes, it can't be daunting to quit but as you see you'll never be alone. You have us. We are always here to help see you through anything that may come along. Preparation for any quit is important and can make a difference. Try introducing this new habit into your life slowly. Start working through the program and take a look at your daily routines. When do you smoke? Where? When? Next, start searching for substitutes and replacements that you feel may help you manage cravings. Ex: gum, ice water, deep breathing, distractions... Start using those strategies to delay your next cigarette. This will help you begin to practice this new skill, build up your confidence and find out what works for you best. The last step is to continue reading through forums and educating yourself on quitting. Come up with a reward system and set a quit date. We're ready when you are! Keep close. I was touched reading through this... You have stumbled into something lifesaving here, Becky - this site and all who frequent it. When I came here, I thought my world was crashing in on me. It's almost embarassing to recall now. Not to belittle your struggle, but from my own perspective, so many here (and elsewhere) have been through so much worse with much less support and made so much more out of it than I. It is very humbling. Those people are people too, just like you and me, and I have followed in their giant footsteps. You may surprised to find a lot of yourself in us. We're just human. My best to you. -fish My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/21/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 383 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 11,504 Amount Saved: $1915 Life Gained: Days: 50 Hrs: 19 Mins: 44 Seconds: 52

Becky - Looks like you have Rusty payin close attention to you. She is an awesome support source with so much knowledge and compassion. I too was a closet smoker. It is funny how so many of us in "helping professions" (education, medical, mental health) felt the need to keep our smoking secret because it was so out of whack with the image we were trying to convey. Click here to read my story We are so used to sneaking, that it is very easy to continue sneaking one here or there when we are quitting. In addition, there are often few in our lives to give us support when we were quitting, cause they didn't know (or we didn't think they knew) that we smoked in the first place! I also live in a rural area. I had no access to a formal support group. Then I found this place. I learned about addiction and withdrawal. I accepted myself as the nicotine junkie that I was. And with the humor, compassion, education and support of those here, I took my tentative first steps. Here I am over a year later - the freedom is just wonderful! Take some time to do the exercises, set up a reward plan, read and post as often as you can, and pay close attention to Rusty! Get rid of all cigs, ashtrays, paraphernalia 6. Stock up on snacks and healthy foods 7. Drink LOTS of water and juice to flush the nicotine 8. Make a reward plan 9. Practice deep breathing 10. Cut back on caffeine And above all, don't smoke! Becky, nearly all of us have experienced much of what you are saying. I smoked for nearly 40 years, quit many times, and was finally successful when I learned two things: I had to stop smoking if I wanted to quit, and that there was incredible support on this site. Please look at the Quit Program tools over on the left, and work the Workbook. Read posts as much as you can...you will learn a lot about quitting. Educating yourself as much as you can is key to success. And start with the understanding that smoking is an addiction, not just a bad habit. You will have to go through withdrawals and perhaps some emotional changes, but if you stick with it, with fortitude and determination, you will make it. Good luck!
