Cigarettes Not Smoked

Hi Mary, Welcome. There is so much information here that you will not want to smoke after you have read it. Read everything you can, do searches on any subject you can think of and there will be a thread about it. Or just go to todays active topics or just keep pushing the "previous" button. Any way you do it, you will find more information on the addiction than you ever wanted to know. And once you know it, you gotta quit. And there is something odd about this site. The people become family instantly! We will be here when you are ready to quit. And my prayers are with you for the doctor's tomorrow that it is not anything really bad or unfixable. Nothing to ad really. Just I'm 64 yrs young, 52 yrs of smoking and had become a chain smoking. Chantix helped me. I don't think it's our age that the thing but our willingness to go the distance it takes to become an X addict. It had gotten to where I could barely breath. So the choice was smoke or breath. I fell so much better not smoking and it was within the first 2 days. Hi Mary, First, of all, WELCOME! A good place to start is by working the program tools on the left of the page. Spend as much time as you can reading posts here and any time you need help, just holler. I can relate to your reluctance and I know it feels quite un-nerving when your heart tells you one thing but the addiction keeps pulling you back. The addiction must be broken and you have to be the one to do it. You can do this. Find that confidence, grab those quitting tools, and let's get to work. Let us know how your doctor's visit goes, ok? Oh Mary - my heart goes out to you as I hear the fear and the ambivalence in your voice. I am similar age (well - i am denying the extra eight years :) ) and i sooo remember myself a year and a half ago as I contemplated quitting. I knew that I needed to, but I really didn't want to, but I knew it was stupid, but it was like giving up my best friend, but I was scared I would be diagnosed with some life ending smoke relateed disease, but I had mental lists of why I wouldn't, but I loved smoking, but I knew I wasn't strong enough to do it, but I really had to, but I had tried and failed before, but I hated myself when I stopped because I turned into such a blubbering cranky person, but I hated myself for being a smoker, etc etc etc etc. The ambivalence and the fears and the "buts" went on and on. Click here if you want to read my story Here I am more than a year and a half later to tell you that this is possible. Not only is it possible, it is wonderful. The freedom from addiction is something else, and now I wonder what in the heck took me so long. Having this site and the people here made all the difference. They taught me about addiction and withdrawal and rewards and support and symptoms and a whole myriad of stuff. Best wishes in this journey. It is bumpy, but boy it is fabulous.
