Dealing with feelings..then and now..

This is a great post Monica because it is such a HUGE part of our quit. In some ways, I am more confident - I have achieved something that I did not think that I could do. Sometimes I think that I might attribute feelings/issues to my quit when they are actually just part of life. Lately, there have been more issues at work. As a result, I am constantly challenging myself, wondering if I am doing enough...and this has taken abit of a bite out of my confidence. In all honesty, I think it has more to do with the things that are happening and less to do with my quit. (But the nicodemon has a way of saying - gee - maybe if you were smoking you would have handled this better) In many ways I am calmer. I can wait in line longer. I can relax more. I don't rush to get home at the end of the day. I am not trying to feed my addiction on an hourly basis. My biggest learning curve is how to deal with loneliness/depression/anxiety. In the past, I would chainsmoke and play internet games and basically "zone" out. I expect it is a similar method of coping that an alcoholic uses. (Deal with the feelings by avoiding the feelings) Now that isn't an option for me and I feel a little lost. The positive side is that now, I HAVE to learn more productive ways of dealing with these emotions. I feel like this is a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge learning experience for me....but one that I have postponed doing for far too long. When a trigger kicks me, I feel like I am naked out on stage. Bright lights blind me, I desperately try to cover myself, and in my mind's eye, I can see them laughing at me. I shout out to the audience to go easy on me as this is my first time, strutting the cat walk. At this point, I am terrified. Then I take a deep breath, toss on a smile, and tell myself I love me the best and if they do not like the way I look, then they can kiss my bottom! I remember that feeling of confidence I had when I burned one. I have realized I still have that confidence, I didnt need to burn one to keep it =) YEP!!! Nothing has changed =) The only thing has changed is I am a non smoker =) My Milage: My Quit Date: 9/21/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 87 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,311 Amount Saved: $261 Life Gained: Days: 7 Hrs: 16 Mins: 51 Seconds: 47

Monica, This is a big step. Learning how to deal with our emotions without our usual crutch is important and can be challenging. Kudos to you on a job well done! Time for a reward! Danielle _____________________ The SSC Support Team

oh monica, let me tell you girlfriend, I have had to relearn out to handle situations and problems in a new way since I quit. I'm more passionate about things because I am no longer hiding behind that smoke screen. I also take things more personal (probably more than I should) because I dont run off and smoke. Its new but so much better to deal with it. Smoking never solved my problems I realized. For some reason, the problems were still there hmmm. Monica, CALMER? WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO SAY. EMOTIONAL? ARE YOU CALLING ME GRUMPY? ;) Seriously, I find that I am a bit more hotheaded. In my 'previous life', if I was annoyed, I'd probably just smoke an extra cigarette. However, I feel in control, this is the most important thing I have done, I am proud of myself and have boosted my confidence no end. I am nodding at a lot of the above statements. Let me add this all-important one for me: I no longer have a sense of "I am missing something". By this I mean, no interuptions during game time with kids, no need to run back into the house for pack of cigs before leaving the house, no stopping at the gas station at crazy hours, etc. Grab wallet and keys and off I go. I love that! My kids love "having me around more" too. Keep up the great quits girls!
