Keeping Quit Over the Holidays

17 years ago 0 607 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Cobenfan, wonderful post!! I just go with the flow over the holidays. I've already passed my "bad" day (the 7th) so all I do is just enjoy the holidays. I will avoid my family because they all smoke, and i will kick my hubby out of the house till the holidays are over (he smokes too). That way I guarantee I will keep my quit (NOT). Honestly, I am so into the holidays, I even grabbed a couple names off a "giving tree" at my chiropractor's office and bought gifts for 3 kids that would otherwise NOT have a christmas. I dont normally do it but for some reason I have money this year. Could it be I actually didnt' smoke my money away? Yup that's it. I am just so thankful for my gift to myself. I already have New year's planned and well, I am hosting a party and my smoking neighbor will be over. Will it bother me? Heck no, she has to go outside and well, I will be warm inside sipping hot totties and chatting with friends and loved ones (and they will go outside to smoke also). There is always someone that doesn't smoke that I can chat with. Dear All: I have compiled a couple of things I have used in the past to not stress and overeat over the holiday season -- These also apply to quitting smoking and keeping the quit overthe holidays. For many of us, this will be our first Christmas without the sticks! Do NOT wait until December 24th to start Christmas shopping, this can be terrible from the overcrowing at stores, traffic, frustration -- all equal to stress! Avoid alcohol, stay with club soda or non-alcoholic punch, if you MUST have a drink, stick to one of something not associated with your old habit of smoking. Or water it down ~ No overeating -- spicy foods and ones loaded with sugar are triggers for many people -- plus it's better for your health if you stay close by the veggie tray or bring a piece of whole fruit with you. I always have an apple or banana in my bag. People tend to say, "what a great idea"! Stay with your rewards, you deserve a treat for keeping your quit! Keep yourself hydrated and take a breather (deep breathing). Go for a swim, do 1/2 hour of yoga, time to relax needs to be part of the plan!!! Be the hostess ~ shopping, cooking and serving will not only keep you busy but will keep you happily chatting with friends and you won't even think about a smoke. Enjoy, you don't have to worry this year about when you will sneak out for a smoke! Hope everyone's holiday season is beautiful, filled with health and blessings. One more thing.... talk to your children about NOT smoking. Hey Windy - I am looking forward to that myself. If we don't get some snow soon, (it's going to be 60 degrees tomorrow!) I won't be able to giggle at those smoking in the snow! Hee Hee.

During the first Christmas season of my quit, I was having horrible mood swings on days 9, 10, 11. At one point, I stormed out of the house and into my car, and drove into town, crying all the way, not knowing where I was going. I passed a Big Lots store, and it suddenly struck me to stop there. I filled a grocery cart full of canned and non-perishable foods and took them to our local Christmas charity. This activity pulled me out of my self and my mood, as I realized that there are so many who have so little, and here I was crying about a cigarette. I encourage everyone to spend some time or money this season helping others in some way, even if it is to just put some money into the Salvation Army bucket. It will make you feel so much better! :) Rusty :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/13/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 733 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 20,533 Amount Saved: $2565.5 Life Gained: Days: 100 Hrs: 21 Mins: 2 Seconds: 30
