Who or what inspired YOU?

17 years ago 0 79 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
My inspiration came from a few factors. One I want to quit for years, I refused to buy a cartoon of smokes because that committed me to smoking the whole thing, so for years I bought a pack or two a day. Secondly, my girlfriend has twin 3yr old girls, they were premature and one really had a tough time, they do breathing treatments to this day to keep there lungs clean and healthy. They are doing really well now, but still do the treatments. I don't smoke around them, I would go in my bedroom or out side when they were around. I still smoked in my apartment when they were not there. I just don't think it is good for them to be around me and what ever second hand smoke lingers with me. They are to important to me, I don't want to hurt them and I want to be around them for a long time to come. Third....G/Fs dad went into the hospital over a week ago. He is and alcoholic and smokes about 3-4 packes a day. He went in and we found he had Pneumonia in both lungs, shortness of breath, and they almost lost him the first morning after he went in. ICU for a more than a week, sadated, and tubed to breath, is not were I want to be down the road! Granted I don't drink that much and only smoked a 1-1 1/2 packs, but it all leads to that kind of ending! Sorry this is so long, but figured I would through my story in as well. What inspired me was that someone I had worked with for 3 years (we were smoking buddies) suddenly died of lung cancer. It was diagnosed only 3 weeks before he died. He didn't tell anyone about it (we had since gone on to different companies), wanted no visitors, and had a closed casket. We were supposed to have lunch together soon. I read about it in the newspaper - at first, I thought it must be his father (they have the same name) but then realized that it was him, my former smoking buddy. He was only 51, had a brand new grandchild, and should have had much more life ahead of him. That was a wake-up call for me. I looked at my two children (ages 13 and 8) and thought to myself that I always want to be there for them, I love them so much, and I don't want to miss seeing them graduate, watching them get married, or the other special events in their lives. They are my angels and I've got to be here on this earth for them as long as possible. So, those were my inspirations. Of course, this is only my first day and it is an awful one so I may not be the best person to ask. I'm having a hard time and really need to get through this. What a great thread!! My inspiration is my 14 year old daughter, and my 11 year old son. I want to set a good example for them, and I want to be around to experience life with them. The thought of not being there for them if they ever needed me saddens me so much it's almost to hard to bare. Protect the quit!!!! My inspiration came to me on the morning of my quit..it was Oct. 31st and I was sitting having my breakfast and a commercial came on t.v. about lung cancer. They gave all these statistics.. non smokers vs. smokers vs. 2nd hand smoke -- and I just let out a deep sigh and asked myself one question.. Am I going to put myself through what my father, his parents, all of my aunts, uncles, 2nd cousins etc etc have gone through? After seeing the pictures on the t.v. I just got up, threw out my remaining packages (3 in all) into the garbage can and said I QUIT! Went to the drugstore bought the gum and the rest is history. (I switched from the gum to the patches a week later) I don't know, I think it's always been in the back of my head to quit but I always could find a reason why not to do it. I've seen these images before -- I guess it finally set a light bulb off in my head on that particular day. i can't say i was inspired as such, but in march this year i was diagnosed as diabetic. i have had retinal screening and there seems to be a problem with my eyes and i have to see the eye specialist. When i went o the doc for my prescription about 7 weks ago, he asked me if i was still smoking and i was, and before i new it i had a prescripton for patches and had agreed to try to give up, and am now at day 39 so it can be done! thanks doc! lynnexx My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/24/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 38 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 574 Amount Saved: 152 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 7 Mins: 21 Seconds: 3

MR Ed, My inspiration was the fact that if I don't do it now, I never will, and I am young enough that I may have a chance of healing my body to the point it was before I smoked. I scared myself into it!!! My inspirations for staying quit, though, are great examples like you!! Cigarettes Not Smoked

17 years ago 0 132 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Smoking is unhealthy, expensive and socially unacceptable these days. I can think of 1000 reasons for not smoking and not really any good ONE for smoking except that I was addicted. I have tried to stop a few times over the 30 years I have smoked but never have I lasted this long. I don't even remember how it happened really....all of a sudden I had picked a date to quit and I did quit that day! Maybe my inspiration came from a Spiritual Power and I am now living a Miracle? Yesterday, I said on one thread that Allen Carr was 'my inspiration' when it came to quitting. Not strictly true. His book certainly opened my eyes to the reality though. My real inspiration was my dentist. He said to me, almost a year ago now, 'Mr Ed, you have gum disease. If you were a non-smoker, you would know this because your gums would be forever bleeding. The reason that they are not bleeding is that not enough oxygen is getting to your gums.' He said this in a very non-judjemental, matter-of-fact way. Something about his manner shocked me into deciding, soon afterwards to quit for good. Who or what inspired YOU? Mr Ed :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 290 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 8,720 Amount Saved: 2175 Life Gained: Days: 48 Hrs: 11 Mins: 9 Seconds: 44

I would have to say it was a culmination of things too. I was sick of the smell on me, in my garage, car, etc. YUK!!!!! I also wanted to see my children grow up and flourish. Setting an example by not smoking instead of just telling them "Don't Smoke" is the best way to reinforce the "Just say no". I didn't want to be old and have regrets ie; reaching for a smoke over my oxygen tank, dying the worst possible way. It was embarassing to have to go sneak a smoke during a professional party, during working hours of a convention, etc. It actually became more convenient NOT to smoke! Took that and ran with it............. here I am :) And thanks to the folks here at SSC who just reinforced my happiness in quitting and all the positive things that accompany being healthy!
