i am ashamed of myself today. i just couldn't control my crave this morning and i had a cigarette. i don't know how i will tell my grandaughter today when she checks in with me to see how i am doing. i am so unhappy with my self i will probably have to lie to her and tell her i am still smoke free. is this a natural thing to want to do or is the truth the better way to stay smoke free? i know i should have thrown out all my cigarettes but they seemed to be a crutch hiding in my closet just in case i couldn't find the strength to fight the urges. i know i should throw them out but just can't do it. help!!!! i feel i might be sinking back into the nasty habit slowly again. slivers, I feel for you and I feel your pain. The first couple weeks are truley a battle between good and evil. We are addicts...addicted to nicoteen...personally, I couldn't even have any butts on the grass outside or in my "butt" bucket...I would have smoked them those first few weeks. I was not strong at all, I had to not have any around me or in my radius. You need to get rid of everything associated with smoking...lighter's, packs of smokes, ashtray's...absolutely everything. Do it right now!!!!!!!!! Then, breathe deep, cry, kick, scream, yell, post here...whatever you have to do to not smoke. We gotta get you through hell week!! Post your feelings....what do you want??? Relax. the important thing is that you are still trying. but trying what? please get rid of all cigarettes and smoking stuff and smoking associations. the only "in case" you will have is to start smoking again. do you want your grandaughter to be honest with you? that's one question. another point (i don't know how old your grandaughter is) is that this is an ugly addiction. I tell my kids how hard it is and that that is a really good reason to never, never start. I agree.. put it behind you and jump right back into your quit -- However, I would strongly recommend that you get rid of all cig related items -- cig's, ashtray's, lighters, matches..the whole damn thing! Hi slivers - In all honesty, the first time I quit I kept 1/2 a pack of cigarettes" in case I needed them". I lasted 4 days and "lo and behold" I needed them. I started back on Sept 11 (no cigarettes or lighters) and haven't gone back. I agree with the others - throw away the smokes...If I really needed them - they are a block away....but I think that if that time ever came, I would talk myself out of smoking before I made it to the store. I'm not sure what to say about what you tell your grandaughter. The only thing about little white lies is that sometimes they can turn into a lifestyle and people keep on sneaking cigarettes until their addiction is once again controlling their lives. Do what you believe is best......we are here to support you along the way. OK Slivers, one thing at a time. You've had a slip. Don't beat yourself up over this. Its just not worth it. You can do this. Are you going cold turkey or are you using any NRT's to beat the cravings? I find this journey is best taken one day at a time. In fact one hour at a time if need be. I'm using Zyban and I have quit date of Jan. 13. I can tell you I feel the difference already. My desire to smoke is decreasing drastically. Keep posting Slivers, and let us know how you're doing. The important thing is that you keep trying to quit.If it helps you to stay quit by telling a small lie then do so and perhaps confess later when you are more confident in your quit. I started my quit carrying a packet and lighter with me just in case as it helped to calm me down. I had the though that if I had them with me I need not fret or worry because I could always have one and it would be easy to take one minute at a time. Eventually I forgot to take them with me untill eventually I gave them away to some needy soul. In retrospect it was not a sensible thing to do and I should have thrown the pack away straight away. I guess I was lucky or stubborn and although I understand why you have them with you I would recommend you ditch them. My partner who started quitting at the same time as me had a cigarette at about day 5 after which she continued quitting and has now been quit for all intents and purposes the same time as me. Put it down to experience , remind yourself of your reasons for quitting and continue your quit if you feel able. It is important to keep trying and even if we sometimes fail we can come back with a better plan and ideas next time.
