To all, esp. newbies.. True Consequences

The Consequences of smoking are many, but I don't believe they exceed the benefits of not. Good post, I concur. I'm sure glad this post was bumped. It really helps to hear and imagine the effects of smoking. And to know that these happended to people we know. It's not just stories to scare us anymore. This is real. A man I knew died 1 month ago from lung cancer. He was bed-ridden. He could barely move. He tied a string to a fan which turned on by a remote which then was tied to some sort of lighter, that would light his smoke. He bought hundreds of packs of smokes when he got weak, because no one would buy it for him. He lived alone with his daughter which is 15 years old. She had to actually watch him take his last breath as he died in his home. His daughter is now an orphan because he is dead and her mother is a drug addict that gave up custody when she was a baby. Wow! I'm new to this site and just read this post by Golferman. Talk about something hitting home! My dad is a lung cancer survivor of 32 years. He is a rarity... most don't survive. You would think that alone would have made me quit long before now! NO! My best friend's mom died last June of lung cancer that spread to her liver first and then her brain. She was gone in less than a year of being diagnosed. Did I quit then? NO! It truly IS amazing how much of a hold this addiction has on you and how much it controls you... and it is an ADDICTION!! My quit date is set for next Saturday - 3/18/06 - and I feel like I am FINALLY READY to truly commit to being smoke free! I don't want to end up living with an oxygen tank or worse! I'm a single mom with a 13 year old boy and I WANT TO LIVE!! Thank you all for being here, sharing your stories and giving me strength and inspiration!! Hyriel1

Joe, (Jean), Chris, Casey, N2k... What a better way to stay quit than to picture that??? Shheeeesh...If that doesn't do it for me than what will??? I am still NixOnTheStixIn06... I don't know about anyone else, but I would rather be a little freaked out and anxious than f***ing dead!!! Golferman.. Great post !!! I could relate to a lot of what you was talking about. I remember my first cigarette of the day always making me feel tired. Waiting for a clear moment when I had a cold so I could ruin it by smoking. Carrying mints in the car and air freshener to spray myself off when I went out in public. Running away from my little boy while telling him to stay away when he just wanted a hug. I have 13 uncles and aunts on my mother's side. Each and every one of them smoked. 9 of them died from lung cancer, 1 died young from ovarian cancer, 1 from a fatal heart attack at 50 years old and the other 2 quit smoking around my age(45)and are still alive and in good health. My mother also smokes and has emphysema. She is on oxygen 24/7 and has pnuemonia this very moment. My father died of throat cancer -he too was a heavy smoker. All of the children in my family also smoked. 4 brothers and one sister. I lost 2 brothers in a car accident in their early 20's. My sister is 49 and has emphysema in one lung. My brother 43, is short of breath and has a smoker's cough. My older brother,57, quit smoking last year and bugged me to join him. We get to watch my mother die a horrible death and one day my sister too probably (she is mentally ill and the chance she will quit is slim). All thanks to smoking and addiction. Smoking is like any addiction.. we put up with incredible amounts of ugliness to keep it going. Smoking sucks !!! I have always gone back as a result of "I can have just one" or I can just be a social smoker" or I can just smoke when I drink." All are false statements. NOT ONE PUFF EVER! is my new mantra. It's the only way I'm going to beat this demon. I have always tried to live without regret, but I do have one...smoking that first cigarette. About 20 years ago I thought I'd look cool and have a smoke at a party...I wish I just hadn't been that cool! With determination and support I have made it this far in to my quit and I'm not looking back.
