Having Surgery- Need Support!

Kitty, I don't need to tell you that if you smoked, you would still be scared of the surgery. A cigarette would only distract you for 5 or 10 minutes, and then you have to deal with the problem again. In terms of dealing with the specific fear of the surgery...find out as much as you can about the procedure - it helps you to prepare mentally. There are a number of authorised web sites that can provide fact sheets on the procedure, and what will happen etc. Yes, spend time with the surgeon...knowledge replaces fear. My best wishes to you. Kitty, I would also recommend considering something like hypnotherapy if you think it might help you. It can be very effective in overcoming specific fears. This is NOT the sort of thing you see on TV - it is a recognised technique where you are fully conscious throughout the whole procedure. It is a method of confronting your fears 'virtually' and up-front, talking them through and 'getting the scared bit out of the way' if you like. You use visual imagery to confront what is going to happen, reduce the panic, and try and persuade your sub-conscious to follow suit! In some ways, I guess it is similar to what you might learn in child-birth classes!!! If you did want to persue this option, as with choosing any consultant, make sure you approach someone with recognised qualifications. Bless you Kitty. You can get through this without smoking. Belive me, it would just add to your worries. Lizzie

Kitty, Have you spoken to your doctor regarding your anxiety? Have you always been anxious? It is possible that your smoking has been masking symptoms of some illness, and when you stop smoking the symptoms abruptly become noticeable. We feel that at this time your thoughts and concerns would best be suitable for our sister site called "The Panic Center". This site does have an online support group and also free tools to assess your needs. Please feel free to visit The Panic Center at: www.paniccenter.net If you have any questions regarding the content of this post, please contact us at your earliest convenience Take care, Melanie __________________________ The SSC Support Team
