confessions of a mid-term quitter

Hello All, I've been quit for over a year and a half. When I'd first quit, things were quite difficult, but i got through the worst of it, and I'm doing okay now. I occasionally think about smoking, but I'm deeply invested in living a smoke-free life. I love being a non-smoker, I love not having to feel guilty, not having nic-fits, not having that tightness in my chest... it's a beautiful feeling being free of cigarettes. My problem is this- I have a pretty big exam coming up. I'm in grad school, and I've been studying for this exam for 10 months. And that old nicodemon is slowly entering my mind again. I'd hoped that my quit would be strong enough to withstand the stress, but I'm worried nonetheless. I really want to get through this without a slip-up. How have any of you dealt with stressful situations when you were well into your quit? I was even thinking of buying some nicorette, just in case (I haven't had any on me in a while, all my old niocorette has long since expired). I'm not at in an emergency situation yet, I just want to be prepared for anything that might happen. Do NOT introduce nicotine into your system under any circumstances. If you think that little voice is bothering you now, just wait until it gets a taste of its drug of choice. Don't do it. You will be playing with fire. You are a non-smoker. The only reason a smoker smokes is to get back to feeling how you are feeling right now. That is as good as it ever gets for them. Don't take yourself back there. Sure you are stressed, sure you are nervous - you'd be crazy not to be but, and this is a big but, smoking will only make the discomfort and irritation stronger. It will not make you stronger. Get a worry stone or something else to reach for to absorb your stress for you - don't turn to something that will only increase it. Whew...there....glad I got that out. I rarely post anymore but when I read your post I almost had heart failure - that is a very dangerous place you are playing - get out of there. Just know that you have a world of quitters sitting in that exam with you and cheering you on. That's all you need. Take good care and please don't do anything that you may regret. Cheers and best of luck. Viga, Look at your stats and know that you have come this far and don't need to go back! Take out your coping mechanisms and use these to push those craves to the curb. Use relaxation techniques to calm and relieve any extra stress. You can do this! Keep Strong, Josie ______________________ The SSC Support Team.
