Stopped quickly by the site and had a minute to post - heading for a ferry, but your title hit me. Sadness and depression have been a big part of my quit. This too was a surprise to me. It does not change how worth it has been, though. And it definitely gets better. Just keep plugging along and don't take ANYTHING you are feeling too seriously for nearly the first six months. Hi redrosie -- I copied this from a really old post from last summer. Nicotine actually alters the chemicals in your brain and the receptors that handle those chemicals, so part of feeling down when you quit is really physical rather than emotional. Your brain is adjusting to how to do things in the absence of nicotine's effects. Anyway...here's part of what was posted in that old thread: I read an article about how nicotine acutally changes the little receptors in your brain so that when you quit smoking your brain actually has to do some work to readjust and start making the "feel good" chemicals work right in the absence of nicotine. Someone said the way he got through the depression stuff was to picture little men up on scaffolding in his brain rebuilding everything nicotine has messed up. The work can't be done quickly, but he said he felt comforted knowing the work was being done, so he'd feel better soon. Having that vision of little workers in my brain fixing everything made me feel so much better! And it made me feel better knowing that there was an actual physical reason for feeling bad, and a reason that was temporary. the same thoughts hit me every so often but beleive me not like it was during the second and third week. It gets so much better it is like a gift. When I get little down, I hit the exercise routine and I immediately feel better. When I exercise I focus on releasing stress and get in a meditative state. redrosie, This is normal :) It will get better!Take the time to do something to reward yourself for 12 days. This is a great accomplishment and you have done so well. Remember, If you have a symptom that persists or seems worse than you expected, you should immediately consult a doctor. It�s possible that your smoking has been masking symptoms of some illness, and when you stop smoking the symptoms abruptly become noticeable.
